J&B Met 2013: the favourites

The J&B Met, the biggest horse race in Cape Town, takes place this Saturday – and while many of the spectators will be focused on the fashion, the punters will have their eyes on the track.

The main event will be a high-stakes affair. With R2.5-million in prize money up for grabs, the bets are on! According to Tab Online and Hollywood Bets, this year could see one of the tightest 2 000m races run yet, with several horses standing a good chance of winning.

Jackson is currently the clear favourite of all the horses to win. Very close second-, third-, and fourth-place contenders are Pomodoro, Martial Eagle, and Slumdogmillionaire. Also look out for Beach Beauty and King of Pain.

With three other Grade 1 races happening on the day (the Investec Cape Derby, Klawervlei Majorca Stakes and J&B Jet Stayers), there'll be plenty to keep both the professional and casual punters happy.

For the uninitiated, there are many ways to bet, but these are probably the simplest way to start:

The win bet – you win if your horse wins. All you have to do is choose your favourite. At the booking window, give the operator the race number, horse number and the amount you wish to spend.

The place bet – you win if your horse comes 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th (only for the 16-runner races). Call the bet as follows: Kenilworth, Race 5 – R20 Place on number 8, for example. The winnings on a place bet are usually less than a win bet because your horse is more likely to be placed than to win outright.

With an expected crowd of over 50 000 people at the Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, this is certainly a highlight on Cape Town's events calendar. Whether it's to suss out the fashion, or watch some quality horseracing, all eyes will be on the Met this weekend.
