Jamie Oliver gets a taste of Cape Town at Mzoli’s Place

While going through the newspaper the other day, I saw that Mzoli’s Place in Gugulethu played host to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver last weekend. Apparently, Jamie loved it and found the experience “very sexy”. He also mentioned that “in this part of the world, fresh is where it’s at”.

Jamie is now featuring Mzoli’s Place on the cover of his April magazine, describing its food as “heaven”. I have to agree that in general Cape Town is the capital of good food – from a braai at Mzoli’s to the city’s chic restaurants, a Camp’s Bay sundowner seafood feast and the utterly luxurious winelands lunch.

Get to Mzoli’s as soon as you can, but if you can’t do it this weekend, I have included a quick and easy chakalaka recipe for you to experience a bit of Mzoli’s in your own home. Serve it with the braai or add some “eish” to your Sunday dish!

45 ml oil
1 onion, grated
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 green pepper, chopped
3 green chillies, deseeded and chopped
10 ml curry powder
3 medium carrots, grated
1 medium cauliflower or broccoli, divided into florets
1 x 410 g can baked beans in tomato sauce
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil and sauté onions, garlic, ginger and green pepper with the chillies and curry powder for five minutes.
Add carrots and cauliflower. Cook gently for about 15 minutes, or until all vegetables are cooked.
Add beans and seasoning, heat through and allow to cool. Serve cold.

Mzolis’ Place is located at NY 115, Shop 3, Gugulethu, Cape Town
