Defending world champions, Italy, drew 1-1 with Paraguay in their 2010 FIFA World Cup™ match at Cape Town Stadium on Monday evening.
It was a cold, wet, windy evening in Cape Town, with a temperature of eight degrees Celsius. Inside Cape Town Stadium, hot chocolate reportedly did a roaring trade as fans tried to keep warm in the stands. Although Italian supporters will be very disappointed with the result, word has is there will still be a big party in Long Street later on.
The wet conditions resulted in a slowish, tactical match. Italy never really got beyond second-gear in the first 60 minues, as the brave South Americans battled it out.
Parguayan centre back, Antolin Alcaraz, opened the scoring for his team in the latter stages of the first half, much to the surprise of many who had written off the South Americans before the match had even started. Italy however equlised on the hour mark, when midfielder, Daniele De Rossi, slotted an easy goal.
Paraguay have never even made it to the quarter-final of a World Cup before. When they hosted a battling Bafana Bafana team in March this year, they only managed a 1-1 draw, which makes Monday’s result even more noteworthy.
The next match at Cape Town Stadium is on Friday, when England take on Algeria. The fun will continue at Cape Town’s Biggest Football Party after this match, where superstar disc jockey, Fatboy Slim, will be performing.
