Cape Town hosts international kite festival

It’s that time of the year again, when the Mother City’s beautiful skies are filled with inspirational creations at the annual Cape Town International Kite Festival.

To be held on the luscious lawns of Zandvlei in Muizenberg on October 22 and 23, the kite festival is a weekend-long celebration of international talent and aerodynamics that is set to attract more than 24 000 visitors.

International kiters on this year’s bill include Axel Kostros (Germany), Karl and Sarah Longbottom (England) and Edoardo Borghetti (Italy), among others.

This year, Africa’s biggest kite festival offers attendees a world of fantasy and entertainment. Show off your craftsmanship at the various kite competitions, or be entertained by the likes of crooner Mario Ogle and songstress Amy Leigh Vermaak.

The competition sure to attract interest is the Boomerang Edu-Kite Schools’ Competition. With more than 50 primary schools and schools for learners with special educational needs from around the Western Cape competing, it’s a battle of the kite runners in a mass fly.

And for the Heritage Kite Award, organisers will be looking for the best example of the Western Cape’s own traditional kite – the swaeltjie, or swallow kite.

The little ones will love the opportunity to meet their favourite Boomerang Network characters, including Snoopy and Fred Flintstone, and enjoy hours of fun with the magical activities on offer. From face painting, puppet and magic shows to balloon sculpting, interactive games and a dance competition, there will be plenty to see and do.

If you feel peckish after all this there are many delicious food stalls where you can savour the delights of traditional Cape Town cuisine.

Now in its 17th year, the Cape Town International Kite Festival is proudly hosted by Cape Mental Health to support its free mental health services for people in disadvantaged communities.

Tickets are available at the gate. For more information about this colourful aerial extravaganza, please visit www.capementalhealth.co.za/kite.
