Pierre Greeff, Hunter Kennedy, Philip Erasmus and Fred den Hartog, collectively known as Afrikaans band Die Heuwels Fantasties, will be performing in the particularly fantastic hills of the Durbanville wine region this Friday, March 11, as they launch their sophomore album, Wilder as die Wildtuin, at D’Aria Estate.
Die Heuwels Fantasties’ eponymous debut was a runaway success and fans of this South African band have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up.
Directly translated, the band’s name means “the hills fantastic”, and their music wallows in nostalgia as much as it celebrates modernity, both stylistically and thematically.
Friday’s 100-minute launch concert will feature guest appearances by Inge Beckmann, Francois van Coke, Johnny de Ridder, Adriaan Brand and Coenie de Villiers – all legends in their own right.
Die Heuwels Fantasties broke out in a big way in 2008 with Pille vir Kersfees, an anthemic festive season song with darker tones audible in the deceptively cheerful sound. From there, their popularity snowballed and Die Heuwels Fantasties are now firmly entrenched in South Africa’s ever-growing alternative music subculture.
That said, their appeal is also increasingly mainstream: Die Heuwels Fantasties’ Facebook fan page has more than 100 000 members (by comparison, their peers, aKING, have just over 50 000 members).
Even if you don’t understand a word they’re saying (though you’d be impressed with their lyrics), this band has an infectious sound that’ll pull you in; their second album is bound to build on an already unforgettable repertoire.
Gates open at 17h00 and the performance starts at 20h00. Tickets are available through Computicket (R70) and at the gates (R90).
