Getaway Travel Blog Conference a success in Cape Town
The inaugural Getaway Travel Blog Conference at the Grand Daddy Hotel in the City Centre on Saturday November 5, 2011 was a resounding success.
More than 30 of the travel blogosphere’s most avid writers, photographers and editors attended this fascinating conference, which featured a variety of well-versed speakers and insightful presentations.
Speakers for the day included CEO of Cape Town Tourism Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold; editor of Getaway magazine Cameron Ewart-Smith; photographer Joseph C Lawrence; professional travel blogger Lucy Corne; co-founder of MyVideo Tristan Owen; professional photographer Russell Smith; and Dan Nash of the Bangers and Nash blog.
Speaking about how social media and blogging impacts on the Mother City’s international visibility, Du Toit-Helmbold said, “Blogging and social media have enabled our challenger brand to stand out and to tell our story. We tap into our markets, especially the locals, who sometimes capture their travel moments faster and this allows for us to be real and authentic.”
While Ewart-Smith provided invaluable tips for captivating readers’ attention and working on their emotions through writing, and Lawrence shed light on enhancing the user experience on the WordPress site, it was Nash’s often humorous but refreshingly honest take on how to monetise travel blogs that really drew attention.
Giving the popular but misused banner ads the boot, Nash encouraged delegates to focus on trade exchanges of content, coverage and publicity for food, travel and equipment with interested suppliers.
Equally as interesting was Corne, who shared her insight about the transition for freelancers and bloggers from print to digital.
