France vs Uruguay draws crowd at FIFA Fan Fest

The FIFA Fan Fest was pumping with eager football fans this evening as France and Uruguay came head to head at Cape Town Stadium. For those who couldn’t attend the match themselves, the massive 72m2 screen more than sufficed – it was clear from the super-sharp images that the atmosphere in Green Point was electric.
Unlike last night’s Welcome Party, tonight’s crowd was far less boisterous, especially towards the end of the match when a goal by either team would’ve caused a major upset. Instead, the game ended in a draw (0-0) but both French and Uruguayan supporters were probably relieved at the result.
But the final whistle prompted the blowing of vuvuzelas and loud applause rang out across the Grand Parade. DJ Ready D, a long-standing Cape Town favourite wasted no time in getting back behind the decks and spinning some tunes while the crowd slowly dispersed into the city’s Friday-night scene, or to bed. It was clearly an exhausting day for many of the fans, some of whom were seen taking a nap on a friend’s shoulder or lap (especially fans under 10 years).
The Fan Fest has proven to be immensely popular as a massive, mixed-bag crowd pulls through from early in the afternoon to be part of the ayoba vibe here in Cape Town. It’s a family-favourite, and also the place where friends congregate to share the soccer spirit that’s hit our city.
