Slangkop Lighthouse, Kommetjie –  Flickr pic of the day

This image was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Joy-Anne Goodenough, aka greenhairmermaid.

Joy-Anne says: “This image is of the Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie, Cape Town. Kommetjie is a small (but growing) seaside village between Noordhoek and Scarborough on the Cape Peninsula.

The lighthouse, which is the tallest cast-iron tower on the South African coast, stands 100 feet from base to balcony. It has been in operation since 1919 and features a revolving electric light resting in a bath of mercury. Visitors can enjoy a fascinating tour with the lighthouse keeper at set times.

I live in the False Bay area and as an amateur photographer I am never short of photo-opportunities right on my doorstep – from the sandy white beaches of Noordhoek to the fynbos-rich Silvermine mountain, the quaint fishing boats at Kalk Bay to the picturesque views from Imhoff farm – it’s all beautiful!

I never leave home without my camera. Cape Town is a photographer’s dream destination and I consider myself beyond blessed to call this city home.”
