Family escapes in the Cederberg

The Bushmans Kloof wilderness reserve and retreat is offering “Family Affair” Bush Breaks this winter. Bushmans Kloof is in the Cederberg and has one of the world’s largest open-air rock art galleries.

Children get to explore these (among all the other discoveries of nature) during the Family Affair escapes offered during school holidays.

The area is an ecological oasis – predator free – and guests can safely wander through the reserve. It was named Top Tourist Facility in South Africa’s West Coast Tourism Gala Awards in 2008.

Parents can be pampered together in the breathtaking riverside setting of the new open-air Spa Gazebo. Here they may choose from the wellness programme of signature spa treatments and massages, using the newly introduced Africology, or world-renowned Elemis range of products.

These fun-filled, three-night family events offer a rare opportunity for the whole family to bond and share quality time together, while experiencing a variety of exciting and stimulating activities.  Parents can have some quiet time for romance and relaxation while their children are taken care of, enjoying the special children’s programme created to show them the magic of the wilderness.

The beautifully styled Relais and Chateaux lodge offers exceptional value, magnificent luxurious accommodation, impeccable service, delicious Cape cuisine and pampering spa treatments. Time together with the children can be spent visiting some of the meticulously kept rock art sites of the San and the Heritage Centre, mountain biking, hiking through the reserve, canoeing, fishing, or swimming in the crystal clear rock pools.

Recognised for its contribution to conserving the abundant indigenous flora, wildlife and priceless San heritage entrusted to its care, Bushmans Kloof has been named a South African Natural Heritage site.

Children will discover fascinating facts about animals, plants and birds, as well as the culture and history of the San, including their rock art, hunting techniques and tracking of animals, and may also try their hand at creating their own “rock art”. The guides supervise all the child-friendly activities, including the option of camping out in the reserve on the last night.

Delicious and nutritious early suppers for children are served daily. Afterwards, guides and child minders entertain the children with night-walks, game drives or DVDs while parents enjoy a romantic dinner for two presented one of the stunning dining venues.

This reserve was listed as a Condé Nast Traveler Gold List Best Hotel in Africa & the Middle East (2009) and Forbes Traveler 400 Best Hotels (2008/9).
