Facebook Feedback Friday: The best scenic drives in Cape Town
Stuart Buchanan is a journalist, blogger, and online writer for Flow Communications.
He grew up in Durban and has lived in various parts of South Africa and the UK, before finally settling on Cape Town. He often wonders why anyone would want to live anywhere else.
Yesterday, we asked the fans of our Facebook page, I ♥ Cape Town: "What is the best scenic drive in Cape Town?"
The most popular answer, by a long shot, was Chapman's Peak Drive. "Chappies" offers stunning 180° views, and, according to the comments on Facebook, is not to be missed!
Here's a selection of some of the answers:
Aukje Ter Horst: From CT to Hermanus along the coast via Strand or from town to Houtbay along the coast.
Michelle Cronjè: The whole drive around the Cape Peninsula including Chapman's Peak, Oukaapse Weg, Newlands to Constantia Nek for a forest drive, and this is just in Cape Town itself.
Janet Prentice: From Stellies to Franschoek and onwards is STUNNING, and so is the coastal road from Hout Bay to Clifton to Town.
Shelley Pope: My drive between Glencairn and Fish Hoek on a beautiful sunny day, looking over Fish Hoek beach and Kalk Bay and driving down Ou Kaapse Weg and looking over towards Constantia – stunning.
Lauren Doyle: The approach just before the Huguenot tunnel from Cape Town side, and the whole stretch on the Worcestor side. The mountains all around Dutoitskloof pass are just spectacular, no matter how many times you drive that way.
Quinton Van Wyk: Nelson Mandela boulevard at night to see the harbour.
Bryan Williams: Victoria Drive past Camps Bay towards the 12 Apostles, and Hout Bay.
Kevin Marques: Constantia Wine route is also up there ... while driving along, you have a sense of serenity and calmness.
Nafiesa Natha: Yesterday took a drive to Seapoint thru Campsbay and had a picnic on Chapman's Peak! From there did Fish Hoek and stopped in Kalkbay, now that was an amazingly beautiful drive! Priceless!!
Chelsea-Lynn Suso Carter Adams: Seapoint through victoria rd past clifton & camps bay past llandudno through to hout bay ( lunch :) ) Chapman's Peak through simons town then to Kommetjie :)
Deidre Muller Henning: Somerset west – Grabouw – Villiers – Franshoek – Stellenbosch – Somerset west!
Jennifer Parvess: I find that no matter which direction you drive in Cape Town you have amazing scenery. Chapman's Peak is one of my favourites though.
Hashim Consalves: Coming down from signal hill to M5 towards Muizenberg.
Roché Petersen: An underrated drive, in my opinion, is Vissershok Road from Durbanville to the N7, passing wine estates and olive farms, with a magnificent view of Melkbos and Koeberg from the zenith. It can be incorporated with Tygerberg Valley Road from Botasig to Durbanville to make an excellent circular drive. Go slow – there's plenty of cellars to pop in at!
Paddy de Vries: Gordon's Bay to Rooiels. No doubt.
Lorraine Kader: I am in Australia any drive in Cape town is magnificent.
Dianne McLaughlin: Hey ... I am sitting in England! Anywhere in Cape Town!!!
Robin George: Wow ... I don't even know! There are so many in this beautiful city that its hard to choose from! You got to love the beautiful city.
