Facebook competition winners announced
From a snowy Canada, Jan van der Leeuw entered our CapeTownHoliday.com competition and sent her Facebook profile off to the Mother City to play virtually in the surf, visit attractions and enjoy meals at top-notch restaurants.
Thousands of people played the interactive game, which automatically put them in line to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Cape Town. The competition started in September and closed on December 31, 2012.
Marianne Bitter, of the Netherlands, won two air tickets for being the player who got most of her friends to play the game. Nadia Jeffries was our domestic winner, and she will be flown to Cape Town and hosted in a hotel for a week.
Game player Sonja Rocher, who was unfortunate not to have won, says: "Oh no!!!! My profile completed the 5 day holiday in Cape Town and what bliss it was! My profile would like to return very soon! Thank you I ♥ Cape Town for the great time my FB profile had, you are the best!!! XxX."
Van der Leeuw was convinced she did not stand a chance of winning the all-expenses-paid trip and, jealous of the fun her profile was having, she booked a holiday to Cape Town for later this year, not anticipating that her name was going to be drawn.
Her response to hearing that she had won was: "You have got to be kidding me."
Her holiday includes flying with Virgin Atlantic, and a made-to-measure itinerary once she's in Cape Town. Van der Leeuw has opted to take up the offer next year, saying her 2013 vacation has already been booked. " I thought my chances of winning were zero to none. I have dreamed of seeing Cape Town and other areas of Africa for so many years," Van der Leeuw says.
Van der Leeuw, who works in IT, says playing the game really made her want to be in Cape Town. "The scenery and culture are so inspiring, and the incredible photos on the FB game made me really want to be there. The aerial route looked amazing, although I'm sure I'd have to tone paragliding down to maybe a helicopter experience."
She booked tickets for herself and her husband, Gregory Holmwood, before the competition closed, and they will be visiting Cape Town in April.
Bitter, from Amstelveen in the Netherlands, won two Virgin Atlantic tickets to Cape Town, for getting the most friends to play the game. Bitter was in the Cape five years ago and says she is excited at being able to return.
Bitter, who works at KPMG, says: "In the FB game I came across so many fantastic things about Cape Town that it really made me want to explore this wonderful place. Just now I had a look at the city guide and came across among others the Waterfront, Table Mountain, Robben Island and Kirstenbosch; these are a few of the things I am definitely going to visit!
"I love travelling and so does my boyfriend, so a trip to Cape Town is a great present," says Bitter, from a cold and snowy Amstelveen.
Even though the competition is closed, you can still send your Facebook profile on holiday to Cape Town, or you can book yourself a trip to one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.
