Discovery Channel Shark Week: Why Cape Town is best
It's Shark Week on Discovery Channel this week, in fact, it's the 25th annual Shark Week. Cape Town and surrounding areas feature prominently every year, with a number of shows having been filmed here.
False Bay is particularly famous for great white shark viewing and photography. The area is famous for its natural beauty, including Seal Island, which has a population of approximately 75 000 Cape Fur seals that attract sharks throughout the year. Even international stars come out to play in the area - the 2011 film Dark Tide, in which Halle Berry and Oliver Martinez end up in the water with sharks, was filmed in False Bay.
Read an interview with local shark expert, Chris Fallows, about facing Cape Town's great whites.
Below are just three of the top shark-related activities in Cape Town and nearby towns:
- Take a shark-watching boat tour in False Bay with Apex Shark Expeditions;
- Go shark cage diving with White Shark Projects in Gansbaai;
- Dive with sharks at the Two Oceans Aquarium (No cage for this one!).
