Dinner – with a dash of inspiration

Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ) is the founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project

On Tuesday July 28, join community volunteer organisation Safer Together for dinner and an inspiring address by Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ), founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project.

The Broccoli Project works with non-governmental organisation, retailers and suppliers to incentivise the poor. Designed along the lines of customer loyalty programmes, the project rewards those who attend skills development workshops and undergo medical screening for HIV, for example, with vouchers for food and shelter. According to the project website, it “rewards life-affirming actions”.

The project recently placed second out of 24 entries at the HiT Global Entrepreneurship Competition in Barcelona, Spain, where it was also recognised as the project with the most social value.

Mark holds a BSc in electrical engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, as well as branding and strategy qualifications from Vega and the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. It was his interest in subjects as diverse as the web 2.0 movement and the bottom tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that led him to found The Broccoli Project.

Mark, who lives in Cape Town, has travelled widely. His interests include reading, hiking, playing frisbee on the beach, entrepreneurship and innovation, the uses of technology in emerging markets – and great coffee.

In his talk, “My journey to making a difference, a 10-year, overnight success”, Mark will share what drove him to give up an exciting career in IT to empower communities and individuals, and he’ll discuss the principles of the success of his enterprise.

The dinner and talk will be held at Harbour House, Kalk Bay, at 19h00 and will include a musical surprise. Enjoy an inspiring talk, a delicious, two-course dinner and the chance to meet people in the Greater Muizenberg community – all for only R130 per person (including gratuity). There will be a cash bar for all drinks.

All proceeds will go to the Safer Together community safety fundraising initiative.
