Confederations Cup – a highlights package
With 2010 just around the corner, South Africa had a lot to prove during the Confederations Cup with regard to our readiness to host the World Cup. Needless to say, it was a resounding success!
Cape Town Tourism followed all the action closely. Here are a few of our highlights:
The opening ceremony of the 2009 Confederations Cup was held in Johannesburg on Sunday, June 14, 2009.
Italy and the USA line up for the national anthems at the start of their Confederations Cup 2009 encounter, June 15, 2009. Italy won the match 3-1.
Over 52 000 spectators packed into Ellis Park Stadium to watch Egypt vs Italy, filling the stadium to capacity. A soccer fan blowing her vuvuzela joined in the spirit of the crowd.
The stadium erupted with celebrations as the final whistle was blown and Egypt were declared victorious.
In the final round of Group A matches, Iraq took on New Zealand. Iraq needed a win to secure their place in the semi-finals, at the expense of South Africa. For the first time possibly in sporting history, South Africans came out in their numbers to support New Zealand.
The USA took on Brazil in the final match of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup on June 28 at Ellis Park, Johannesburg.
In the 84th minute, Brazilian skipper Lucio took Brazil into the lead, 3-2. It was the goal that would make Brazil the Confederations Cup champions for a record third time.
