Chapman’s Peak Drive – Flickr pic of the day

This beautiful panorama of the newly opened Chapman’s Peak Drive was captured by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Evelyn Lyle.

Evelyn says, “I took this before 09h00 on the morning they opened the newly renovated Chapman’s Peak Drive.

“Chapman’s Peak Drive started off as a narrow, winding gravel road in 1915 . The road was hewn out of the face of the sheer cliffs and was officially opened in 1922.

“This scenic drive is also notorious for rockfalls and was closed to the public for about 18 months.”

Chapman’s Peak is the 593m (1 945ft) high southerly extension of the Constantia Berg, and the 9km (5,6mi) long Chapman’s Peak Drive (when open) offers stunning 180-degree views over the Atlantic Ocean.
