Celebs in Cape Town: Hollywood stars spotted in the Mother City
Fazielah Williams has lived in and loved her Mother City since birth. Having lived all over the Peninsula during her childhood, she now calls the picturesque City Bowl home and likes nothing more than watching the sun set over Table Bay from the window of her apartment.
A lover of the arts and proud Cape Town fanatic, Fazielah began her writing career by spending many hours as a child conjuring fantastical stories that featured independent heroines from faraway lands who saved the Prince instead. This Capetonian princess has enjoyed stints as a magical arts PRO and TV publicist before finding her calling as a travel writer.
When not waxing lyrical about the Fairest Cape’s most loved attractions and activities and embarking on unexpected adventures, Fazielah can usually be found taking in a show at one of the City’s fabulous theatres.
Lights! Camera! Action!
If you’re hearing these commands being shouted out while you’re enjoying a stroll in our bustling Mother City, chances are you’ve stumbled across a film set in movie-loving Cape Town.
With the fourth season of popular political thriller TV series, Homeland, starring the beautiful Claire Danes, set to be filmed here from June 2014 and Hollywood’s bad boy himself Sean Penn being spotted at local eatery Dias Tavern last week; star-gazing has become Cape Town residents’ number one new favourite activity.
Our hometown is blockbuster material any given day, and now that Tinseltown has cottoned on to that glorious fact, thanks to movies like Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Searching for Sugarman and Safe House ; we can expect to see more of showbiz’s brightest stars grace our picture perfect streets.
Academy Award winner Penn is rumoured to be in town scouting locations for his directorial debut feature film, The Last Space, and caused quite a stir at Dias Tavern in District Six when he popped by for lunch with his local production crew.
Penn is said to have been amicable and warm towards fellow diners. World Design Capital 2014‘s CEO, Alayne Reesberg, was at Dias Tavern for a business meeting too and says: “Oh yes, he is charming. We waved at him and he waved back, twice.”
Homeland is the second series in recent months to cast the Mother City as its background set, following in the cinematic footsteps of Baywatch spin-off, SAF3, and its cast and crew are excited to make our city their new base:
“We are thrilled to have found a new home in Cape Town and look forward to getting season four's production off the ground”, said Alex Gansa, show runner and executive producer for Homeland.
Cape Town has been Hollywood central in the past six months with Katie Holmes and the cast of The Giver, Lily Allen, Bruce Springsteen and Eminem seen out and about on her sun-kissed shores.
