The whale-watching season begins in earnest on May 1, 2010, and the public is encouraged to report whales they spot for recording in the local whale sightings log, maintained by A Whale of a Heritage Route. The log is maintained on behalf of SA Tourism’s whale desk and assists in promoting False Bay as a whale-watching destination abroad and locally.

The first Southern Right Whale reported earns the whale spotter a prize at the annual Whale Spotters breakfast in December this year.

To report a whale sighting, SMS details of where and when to 079 391 2105.

To view the whale sightings log, visit www.awhaleofaheritageroute.co.za/whalelog2010.htm.

A Whale Spotter’s Club is also being launched for children. Membership is free and T-shirts, caps and a whale identification poster will be available from May 1, 2010.
