This is the first weekend of spring and clear, sunny weather is predicted for Cape Town. September is World Tourism Month and the theme this year is biodiversity. With this in mind, we recommend that you take time this weekend to get outside and enjoy the wonderful biodiversity that the Mother City has to offer.

Ideal places to enjoy the change of season include Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Table Mountain National Park, Helderberg Nature Reserve, Durbanville Rose Garden and Cape Point.

Take a drive out west toward Melkbosstrand to see the flowers coming into bloom.

According to the South Africa Weather Service, this is what to expect this weekend:

Friday: Maximum temperature of 24 degrees Centigrade, clear skies, no chance of rain.
Saturday: Maximum temperature of 17 degrees Centigrade, partly cloudy, no chance of rain.
Sunday: Maximum temperature of 16 degrees Centigrade, overcast skies, 30% chance of rain.

Here are some of the other highlights to look forward to in Cape Town this weekend:

Basement Jaxx live in concert

Basement Jaxx, the two cheeky British disc jockeys who have produced hit singles such as Where’s Your Head At?, Red Alert, Raindrops and Oh My Gosh, will be spinning the decks at The Waterfront Lookout and the V&A Waterfront on Friday night. They will be preceded by popular South African disc jockey, Roger Goode as well as other upcoming acts.

The concert will start at 18h00, although Basement Jaxx are only expected to appear at midnight.

Tickets at the door are R260, or R240 through Computicket.

Woyzeck at the Baxter Theatre

Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, directed by Laura Foot, is on show at the Baxter Theatre until September 11. According to the Baxter website, the play, written in 1834, revolves around a working-class community. “Far from being a simple tale of village murder, Woyzeck shows us the systematic debasement, even intellectual and spiritual ‘murder’, of the protagonist and all his class,” the website states.

This weekend there will be shows on Friday and Saturday, starting at 20h15.

Tickets are R130, available through Computicket.

1910-2010: From Pierneef to Gugulective

Iziko South African Museum will be exhibiting a diverse range of South African art over the last 100 years.

Works by Gerard Sekoto, Irma Stern, George Pemba, Maggie Laubser, Gerard Bhengu, JH Pierneef, Durant Sihlali, Dumile Feni and many others will be on display.
