Cape Town players join Springbok squad for Lions Series

The Springbok squad that will be facing the British Lions in the upcoming Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series was announced on Monday at Montecasino, Johannesburg.

The 28-man squad includes familiar faces like Cape Town’s very own Schalk Burger. With 49 caps, he certainly has a lot of experience to offer the new members of the squad. Other Stormers (Vodacom Western Province players) who made the squad include SA Rugby Player of the Year Jean de Villiers, Andries Bekker the tallest player ever to play for South Africa and Ricky Januarie, a familiar face in the Springbok line-up.

After the Vodacom Bulls’ recent victory in the Super 14 and the South African Sevens team’s win in the IRB Sevens Series, South African rugby is on a high. With only two uncapped players, national coach Peter de Villiers has built his team using experience and players who are on top of their game, ensuring exciting rugby for all the fans.
