Cape Town Opera is putting on a production of Madama Butterfly, a love story with all the popular elements of love, loss, hope and despair, at the Artscape Opera House in the city centre.

The style of this production will be a blend between Western opera and kabuki, a traditional form of Japanese theatre.

When composer Giacomo Puccini saw Madama Butterfly for the first time as a play, he fell in love with it and turned it into an opera that proved to be one of the most popular ever.

The songs will be sung in Italian but subtitles will be available.

Performances are on May 27 and 29 at 19h30; May 31 at 15h00; and June 3 and 5 at 19h30. Tickets cost between R150 and R350.
