Beautiful people, breathtaking designs and brilliant shows make attending the African Fashion International (AFI) Cape Town Fashion Week a must-do in the Mother City, on Friday July 15 and Saturday July 16.

In the run-up to the event, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) saw hundreds of fashion lovers flock to see the preview of the spring/summer 2011/12 collections of Tart, Michelle Ludek, Habits, Gavin Rajah and Abigail Betz on Thursday July 14.

With photo opportunities on the red carpet, the chance to rub shoulders with celebrities, mixologists whipping up designer cocktails and a cluster of renowned beauty stands to visit for makeup touch-ups, getting caught up in the glamour and fantasy of the fashion world was all too easy.

Tart, an up-and-coming design team, had audiences eager to see what it would be showcasing on the 360º catwalk. “While I give credit to the established designers, it is always good to support the young talent like Tart too,” said fan Juanita du Plessis.

Tart did not disappoint with a jungle theme-inspired collection that included gorgeous maxi dresses. Michelle Ludek’s collection, with its edgy party dresses and sexy hot pants, was a perfectly suited partner for the show. Charlie Hilltout, a visiting Belgian designer, commended Ludek for “the stunning simplicity of the dresses. The simple shades suit the designs perfectly”.

Celebrated designer Jenny le Roux’s collection for Habits was a resounding success. It featured tunics in paint box brights, stripes and florals, two-piece suits, blazers and dresses. “I’m over the moon! The show was everything I expected and more,” gushed Le Roux after the show.

Hailed as fashion royalty, Rajah certainly had his loyal subjects jostling for a seat at his show, with many having to settle to watch from the sidelines.

Held in the ballroom at the CTICC, and attended by celebrities including TV personality Jo-Ann Strauss, Rajah’s 2012/13 show proved once again why he is such a revered creative.

His Jaipur collection was fantastic. From the classic little black dress with an eccentric twist and metallic leather jackets paired with floating maxi-dresses to sequined evening dresses and the showstopper – an exquisite bridal gown – Rajah and his team outdid themselves.

“The success of the Jaipur collection lies in teamwork,” said Magboebah Khan, a member of Rajah’s design team. ”Everyone, from the designer to the seamstress, plays a part. When you love what you do, you do it perfectly.”

Betz’s collection featured a whimsical theme with lace and silk on whites and nudes. Quite a departure from the other shows, but refreshing all the same.
