The 20th birthday edition (April) of Getaway magazine features a list of the world’s top 20 places to visit. Anyone who has visited the beautiful Mother City would not be surprised to hear that Cape Town features on that list.

According to Getaway, the destinations “have been selected on their ‘wow’ factor, the sort of destinations for which world travellers can earn bragging rights and remember for the rest of their lives.”

While the article details Cape Town’s Big Five, those attractions that are usually on the top of first-time visitors’ lists – Table Mountain, Robben Island, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, Cape Point and Nature Reserve and the V&A Waterfront – it also explores the “quieter riches” that Capetonians and frequent visitors value most.

Places like Kalk Bay, Boulders Beach, Sandy Bay, Noordhoek, and Simon’s Town waterfront are gems which should be explored, as should the lesser-known hikes up Table Mountain.

Listed along with destinations like Machu Picchu, Venice and the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Town should be on every traveller’s must-see list.
