Cape Point ostrich – Flickr pic of the dayJul 22, 2009

image

This lovely photo of a young ostrich at Cape Point was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Jurgen Banda-Hansmann.

Jurgen says, “I found this young ostrich one evening, shortly before Cape Point National Park was closing.

“When I got out of the car, the ostrich didn’t seem disturbed by my presence and allowed me to approach.

“It was a mild evening and I spent a couple of minutes photographing the ostrich. My biggest concern was that I couldn’t see the parents and didn’t want to get between the adult animals and the youngster.

“When the ostrich started moving towards me, I took refuge in my car,” he continues.

The ostrich is the world’s largest living bird, averaging 2m (6.5ft) in height and weighing up to 156kg (344lb).

Do you have images of Cape Town you’d like to share with us? We’d love you to join the Cape Town. Live it. Love it. Flickr group!

Is it just not too ironic to see an Ostrich on a beach setting as one would normally find them in the dry Karoo etc. This scene has always been very intriguing to be but all the more so fascinating as it shows even amongst our fauna how diverse our city is.
