Cape Argus 2009 – A Cape Town Tourism Flickr photo essayMar 8, 2009
This is my third year doing the Argus. I spend a few months before the event training, and I load up on carbs the night before. On the day I’m up at 5am sharp for a quick coffee before driving into town with all my specialist gear.
Then I get out my camera and take pictures of all the people on bicycles who are actually doing the race.
Sometimes I think I’m a bit mad to be getting up so early just to take photos, but the festive and friendly atmosphere at the starting line always makes me feel that it’s worth it. Seeing the CBD so transformed is especially appealling, as I dodge through the thousands of cyclists and watch the sun come up.
This year had an added hazard: very strong wind. People were hugging lampposts to avoid being blown away, and had to be wary of flying cardboard and up-ended portaloos!

This is one of the very best events in Cape Town and it’s amazing how everyone sttuck through the howling winds. Well done to everyone, the organisers, workers and participants.

great shots - really captures the day! i still cannot believe the wind and that i managed to get around the peninsula in one piece! thanks :)
Brilliant pics! An excellent reminder of clinging to a lamp post in the dark with grit in my eyes :) I can’t believe you actually managed to take pictures in that wind. It was all i could do to dodge the portaloos…
@ Kimberley: Well done for making it!
@ Parfait: Thank you! I had a gritty taste in my mouth for the rest of the day. It was grit.

Hi Max, loved your photo essay of the Cycle Tour! The atmosphere in Cape Town during the race is so amazing, not even a 100km South Easter can dampen the spirits! Thank you for sharing the pictures - they tell a great story.
