Cape Town on a budget: places to eat
Cape Town offers something for everyone's wallet. We've mentioned the affordable accommodation in the Mother City, recommended places to take your loved one for a romantic picnic, and shared some great ideas for a night out that won't break the bank.
But when hunger strikes, where do you turn?
Luckily, Cape Town offers a number of affordable places to eat, not only in the city centre, but in many of the surrounding suburbs too. If you are looking to eat on a budget, you won't be short of options.
Feeling adventurous? Want to try a local delicacy? Read our recent blog about finding the perfect gatsby, and follow the trail to make up your own mind about whose is the best around.
In the mood for seafood? How about something traditionally African? Check out the options below:
Mariner's Wharf in Hout Bay is a popular spot for tourists, and for good reason – the fish and chips here are legendary! There are several places to find a bite to eat – the seafood bistro, the maritime-themed restaurant upstairs, and the fresh fish and live crayfish market outside. There are also gift and curio shops to remember your meal by. Built on a pier, Mariner's Wharf is a definite highlight when visiting the lively coastal town of Hout Bay.

Fish on the Rocks
Of course, a harbour town like Hout Bay has more than one place to find delicious, affordable seafood – and Fish on the Rocks is definitely one of the best! Flanked by the harbour, the wharf and the old naval heritage site (West Fort Battery 1782), and with Chapman’s Peak as a backdrop, Fish on the Rocks will make you feel right at home. Originally a fisherman’s supply store, this family-owned restaurant offers a tasty prawn combo, ideal for four, as well as mouth-watering hake, snoek, calamari and linefish specials.

Maphindi's is a dynamic business situated in the heart of Nyanga East. Maphindi's Butchery offers fresh meat, chicken and pork, with the option of having the meat braaied in shisa nyama fashion (buy-and-barbeque). To experience the great hospitality, sit down for a meal at Maphindi's Restaurant, or if you are on the go, try its takeaways. Both offer a variety of meals, including meat and chicken stews, and its famous vetkoek!
