Cape Town Carnival 2014: Road Closures ,Parking Facilities and Public Transport

The biggest, colourful parade of the year is coming to the Mother City this Saturday 15 March, 2014: the Cape Town Carnival!

Before you head out to marvel at the spectacular floats, vibrant performers and amazing costumes, please be aware of the following road closures and parking facilities:

Road Closures:

Friday 14 March 2014 to Sunday 16 March 2014

- Somerset Road : Intersection of Buitengracht Street and Somerset Road  from 14h00 - 01h00
- Chiappini Street:  Prestwich Street and Somerset Road  from 14h00 – 01h00
- Chiappini Street :Battery Centre and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Hudson Street: Harley Davidson and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Dixon Street: Cubana and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Prestwich Street: Alfred Street and Chiappini Street from 08h00 – 01h00
- Prestwich Street: On west side of Alfred Intersection (Friday 14 to Sun 16 March) from 17h00 – 01h00
- Alfred Street: Schiebe Street and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Alfred Street :Prestwich and Somerset (Pavement driveway for Rockwell Hotel from Prestwich) from 17h00 – 01h00
- Alfred Street: Prestwich and Hospital Street (Friday 14 to Sun 16 March) from 16h00 – 01h00
- Napier Street: Sacred Heart Church and Somerset Road from  14h00 – 01h00
- Moreland Street: Napier Street and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- De Smit Street :Intersection Somerset Road  from 14h00 – 01h00
- Ebenezer Road :VJ Hotel Parking Entrance and Somerset Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Highfield Road: Highfield Street and Somerset Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from 14h00 – 01h00
- Boundary Road: Intersection Somerset Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from 14h00 – 01h00
- Wessels Road :Intersection Somerset Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from 14h00 – 01h00
- Exhibition: Ter intersection Main Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from  14h00 – 01h00
- Ashstead Road: intersection Main Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from 14h00 – 01h00
- Somerset Road :CBD bound carriage way at the intersection of Ashstead Road Granger Bay Blvd and Somerset Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from  14h00 – 01h00
- Granger Bay Blvd: Helen Suzman Blvd traffic circle to Main Road (limited access from 14h00-17h00) from 14h00 – 01h00
- Somerset Road : Highfield Street and Vesperdene Road, Sea Point bound Carriage way from  14h00 – 01h00
- Main Road: Sea Point bound carriage way between Upper Portswood Road and York Road from 14h00 – 01h00
- Main Road: Varneys Road and Granger Bay Blvd CBD bound carriage way (vehicles needing to access car park behind Ultra liquor can do so) from 19h00 – 01h00

Important to know:

Vehicle access permit holders can gain access to the following controlled-access vehicle corridors in Somerset Road:

• Between Upper Portswood- and Vesperdene Roads.
• Between Exhibition Terrace and Ashstead Road.
• Between Son Vida vehicle entrance gate and Boundary road

Impact of Road Closures

Public transport services that, for any portion of their routes, operate along closed or restricted roads may
have some route section deviations. Normal scheduled bus services will be affected by these road closures in
the Green Point area as well as the CBD from 14.00h on the 15th March 2014

Parking:

- Parking restrictions will be enforced in residential areas adjacent to the Fan Walk from 00h00 (midnight)
- Friday 14 March to 01:00 on the 17th March 2014. Motorists are advised to obey the signage.
- On-street parking in the CBD will be available but no additional security will be provided. Parking tariffs will apply until 13h00 on Saturday 15 March when on street parking becomes free of charge.
- V & A Waterfront has approximately 3,500 parking bays available to the general public. There is a charge associated with this parking.
- Free unsecured parking is available at the Foreshore.
- Gallows Hill will be used for VIP and disable parking .

The Cape Quarter also has the following parking available
- R20 parking cap after 6pm
- 27 Somerset Road
- 900 parking bays

People with Disabilities

Dedicated parking has been allocated at Gallows Hill. Only people with an official disability permit from the City will be allowed to park in this dedicated parking area.

Public Transport:

MyCiti Bus info as follows:

The following MyCiti Bus routes will run until 1 am on Sunday morning:
• 101 - VREDEHOEK – GARDENS – CIVIC CENTRE
• 102 - SALT RIVER – WARMER ESTATE – CIVIC CENTRE
• 103 - ORANJEZICHT - GARDENS - CIVIC CENTRE
• 106 - WATERFRONT SILO - CIVIC CENTRE - CAMPS BAY (CLOCKWISE)
• 107 - WATERFRONT SILO - CIVIC CENTRE - CAMPS BAY (ANTI-CLOCKWISE)
• 113 - SEA POINT - FRESNAYE - THREE ANCHOR BAY
• T01 - WOOD – TABLE VIEW – CIVIC CENTRE - WATERFRONT
