The 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in Cape Town was won by Reinardt Janse van Rensburg of Team MTN Qhubeka, after a tight sprint at the finish. The women's event was won by Ashleigh Moolman.
The 23-year-old Janse van Resburg, who lives in Pretoria, said on Twitter after the race: "My phone has never been this busy. Thanks everybody for the messages! Its the first race I've known, great to win it!"
Moolman said via Twitter: "Thanks everyone for the congrats & mentions! Delighted with my win at #Argus today, but praying hard for teammates & all involved in crash!"
The 110-kilometre Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, which starts in Adderley Street and finishes in Green Point after a tour of the peninsula, is regarded as one of the most scenic cycling events on the planet. Popular sections of the route include Misty Cliffs and Chapman's Peak. Competitors had to contend with extremely high temperatures along the route, but most appeared to be enjoying the warm weather.
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, who normally fires the gun to start this event, was today among the 36 000 cyclists who started the race. Despite her recent jokes about her age, Zille is still 31 years younger than the oldest competitor at this year's event. Japie Malan, aged 92, started the race on a tandem bicycle with his son.
