Bubbles Bar Cape Town: A delightful drag venue

The newest addition to Cape Town’s cobblestoned “gay village” of De Waterkant is Bubbles Bar.

This intimate gem of a bar is the product of French chanteuse Lola Lou and Latina tour de force Venus Mercedes. Lola and Venus (powerhouse Cape Town drag acts) have made a rhinestone nest and also serves as an incubator for “daughters” honing their craft.

Entertainment spans the gamut of performance acts, from expert lip-syncing and killer dance moves to bling-encrusted outfits crowned by fierce Afros and wigs.

What makes Bubbles Bar exceptional is that between the gay anthems you’ll find soulful ballads such as Lady Gaga’s “Speechless” and Radiohead’s “Creep” sung live by the grande dame Lola herself and also by Roxy le Roux who touches many a heart with her soulful rendition of “Desperado”.

Odidi Mfenyane is another guest singer who brings a strong showing of African style and flair. Her jaw-dropping moves could easily challenge those of her idols, Grace Jones and Beyoncé, while her outfits are enough to make Winnie Madikizela-Mandela envious!

Visitors should make their way to Bubbles Bar at around 21h00 to get a table or seat for the show. Ladies in high heels should maintain their poise, as they have to tread carefully over a wire grid en route to the bar while expert mincing drag queens watch their every move, just waiting for a wobbly ankle!

At Bubbles you’ll be greeted by an intimate and friendly yet sophisticated crowd, with a stage set at the far end. Patronage is a mix that varies from metrosexual to leathermen.

Bubbles Bar is directly opposite Café Manhattan on De Waterkant Road.

Bubbles Bar is hosting an extravaganza charity event on June 30, featuring a number of artists. Read more at http://gayflagofsouthafrica.co.za/events/?event_id=9
