Sport lovers, industry players, philanthropists and champions have been flocking to the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards 2011 in Cape Town this week.
The summit, which opened on December 5, 2011, is taking place at the Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa in Century City and the Cape Town International Convention Centre until December 8.
Driven by Beyond Sport, it is a global initiative that celebrates and supports organisations and individuals who drive positive social change through sport.
This year’s theme is about exploring sport’s role in social change and the compelling programme includes appearances by former British prime minister Tony Blair, who is the chairperson of the Beyond Sport Ambassadors, and four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson. There will also be social change discussions regarding sport, music and film with actress Vanessa Haywood, musician Danny K, and Lucas Radebe, former captain of Bafana Bafana.
The awards, to be held over the last two days of the summit, will select winners from 35 that have been shortlisted, covering 18 countries and 22 different sports. The winners will receive a substantial package of business support to help them grow and become sustainable in the future.
Beyond Sport has partnered with Barclays Spaces for Sports, Time Inc. and United Nations Children's Fund. For more information about the summit and awards, please visit www.beyondsport.org
