Amarula Cape Town cocktails draw crowds at the Taste of Cape Town festival

It was with a rumbling stomach that I visited the Taste of Cape Town festival on Friday, April 3. The festival is a fabulous annual culinary experience. It gives Capetonians and visitors the opportunity to sample food from Cape Town’s top chefs and restaurants, and learn a thing or two to add to their personal kitchen repertoire.

My evening was well spent, sampling delicious delicacies from Cape Town’s top restaurants. I also thoroughly enjoyed sipping on the five delicious Amarula cocktails by the finalists in the Cape Town Tourism and Amarula competition.

Amarula and Cape Town Tourism joined forces to launch the first Amarula Cape Town cocktail competition. The initial phase of the competition was open to all restaurants and bars in Cape Town, and asked entrants to develop the best Amarula cocktail. From those entries, five finalists were chosen.

Taste of Cape Town hosted the five finalists, who whipped up their cocktails for the public to try. The excitement and competition among the bartenders was intense, especially when some areas of the stand were a bit more active than others.

Those who couldn’t make it to the festival can still vote by making their way to any of the five bars represented (Chapman’s Peak Hotel, Cantina Tequila, Karibu Restaurant, Tuscany Beach, Zevenwacht Restaurant) to try the delectable cocktails. You can then cast your vote online.

Two representatives who are part of the team that creates the winning Amarula Cape Town cocktail will win a trip to the World Cocktail Championships in Berlin, Germany, to be held in August 2009. Capetonians will then have another reason to celebrate as Cape Town names its very own official Amarula Cape Town Cocktail.

You can still vote for your favourite on www.capetown.travel/competitions.
