A sommelier’s guide to wine-tasting like a pro with Table Bay Hotel’s Dominic Bowers

Fazielah Williams has lived in and loved her Mother City since birth. Having lived all over the Peninsula during her childhood, she now calls the picturesque City Bowl home and likes nothing more than watching the sun set over Table Bay from the window of her apartment.
A lover of the arts and proud Cape Town fanatic, Fazielah began her writing career by spending many hours as a child conjuring fantastical stories that featured independent heroines from faraway lands who saved the Prince instead. As someone who represents Cape Town Tourism at many events, I must confess choosing good wines from bad, pairing the correct wines with dishes and knowing what flavours to taste is fairly daunting.
As the old adage goes, when in doubt, ask, so I sought my answers from the Table Bay Hotel‘s sommelier Dominic Bowers.
What is a sommelier I hear you ask? Well, put simply, Dominic’s role at the Atlantic Grill, the Table Bay Hotel’s restaurant, is to pair the chef's dishes with great wines. As a trained wine professional (Dominic is a star Wines of South Africa graduate), this Mitchell's Plain-resident knows what he’s talking about.
A man who adores having his big, juicy medium-rare steak paired with a robust Cabaret Sauvignon from the Cape Winelands, Dominic is also crazy about the Mother City. He loves her cosmopolitan vibe and would like nothing more than to visit the iconic Robben Island.
