1. The Whole World is Watching

The global showcase of the sport will broadcast Cape Town to viewers in over 160 countries and is the first of its kind on the African continent. It’s one of the reasons South Africa was named the world’s leading Sport’s Tourism destination at the World Travel Awards in Qatar in 2012. 10% of all tourists who visit South Africa’s shores come to watch or participate in sporting events, with spectators making up 60 to 80%. The event is an incredible exhibition of Cape Town’s gifts, a natural extension of our active, outdoor lifestyle and an opportunity to support Cape Town's rising prominence on the biggest stage. Speaking of which…

2. The World’s Best Triathletes Will be Competing

The ICU World Triathlon series attracts the cream of the sport with athletes from more than 60 countries, including Olympians, who will be competing ferociously for glory over the standard Olympic distance (1,500km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run.) Individuals and teams will also be entering into a sprint distance covering 0.5km of swimming, 20km riding and 5km running and let’s be serious, only elite athletes would consider sprinting that far! But jokes aside, not to worry…

3. Weekend Warriors and Families Are Welcome

The shorter distances and team events (can’t cycle? recruit a friend!) help make the ICU World Triathlon a family-friendly event suitable for kids, amateurs and adventurers. In fact, of the 38,000 participants in the 2013 World Triathlon Series, only 240 of them were pro-athletes. Globally triathlon is one of the fastest growing Olympic sports in terms of participation, boasting a 31% increase in participation between 2012 and 2013. So why not saddle up? Cape Town is a triathlete’s dream, not in the least because…

4. It’s Ridiculously Pretty

Cape Town is a triathletic paradise thanks to the combination of the exquisite terrain and a robust industry, making the ICU World Triathlon a perfect day out for visitors of all kinds, especially families supporting entrants.  The series is being held at the V&A Waterfront, one of the crown jewels in Cape Town’s glittering bouquet of natural beauty. The epicentre of excitement will be the Race Village at the Look Out Venue, the site of a lifestyle expo and grand stands for the public to view the finish line. So pull through if, like us…

5. You Love Cape Town

Cape Town continues to rise in international esteem as one of the world’s ultimate destinations, recently voted the Global Earth Hour Capital 2014, as well as the World Design Capital for 2014. It’s a city of where the unexpected is always around the corner, a city which comes alive in sound, colour, tastes and scents. We love the fact that ICU World Triathlon has chosen Cape Town as one of the 8 cities on its world schedule and we just can’t wait to showcase our beauty to the world.
