2012 Cape Town Marathon: Road closure information

The Cape Town Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 23, 2012, following a route fittingly designed to celebrate the Mother City’s rich, natural and cultural heritage.

The event, which will see more than 5 000 athletes participating in one of the biggest events on the running calendar, is supported by the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Peninsula Beverages. The route showcases the mountain, the sea, and many of Cape Town's beautiful attractions.

The Cape Town Marathon is a qualifier for the 2013 Comrades Marathon and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon but the race organisers have eliminated steep hills and unnecessary turns, where possible, to create a route that offers opportunities for elite athletes to break records while being manageable for novices.

Free running events will be held at the Green Point Common fields and are open to anyone the day before the Cape Town Marathon, Saturday, September 22, 2012. The Cape Town 5km Fun Run will take place at 16h30 and the Cape Town 5 x 4,2km inter-club/company/school relays at 14h30.

The starting gun for the marathon will fire at 06h30 in Adderley Street, in front of the Cape Town Station. The 10km races will start at the same time and place, following most of the route of the last 10km of the marathon.
