Cape Town advertising agency, King James, was the highest ranked agency at the 2010 Loerie Awards, which were held at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town this weekend.
King James was prominent throughout the awards and won a Grand Prix prize for the Allan Gray television commercial, “Legend”, which explores what 1950s icon James Dean could have done with his life, had he not died in a car accident at the age of 24. The idea behind the commercial is to promote long-term financial planning.
The commercial was filmed entirely in Cape Town, although numerous agencies from around the country played a part in putting it together.
Alistair King, director of King James, said that Cape Town is an unbeatable environment for creative activity. Originally from Johannesburg, King said that Cape Town has a creative process that bigger cities cannot match because “things move too quickly”.
He explained that great concepts take time to materialise, which is why Cape Town is such a popular creative city.
“Some people say Cape Town is too slow, but from a creative perspective, it moves at just the right speed. The creative process needs to be slow. Cape Town simply has a great creative vibe, which is very difficult to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced it.
“Cape Town is the perfect city for creative people.”
