This photograph of a turtle at the Two Oceans Aquarium was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Adriaan Fenwick.
Adriaan says: “I took this photo when we visited the Two Oceans Aquarium with our baby son to show him all the lovely sea creatures. We watched this sea turtle swim around gracefully in the main entrance tank.
“After some time he came down to the bottom of the tank where the rocks were and gave me an opportunity to photograph him. When I was taking the shot it literally looked like he was free-falling as he stayed in that position while gliding down.”

This photograph of a party in Long Street was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Justin van Zyl.
Justin says: “It was the opening day of the World Cup, and after watching South Africa play I stepped out on to Long Street to find the entire street filled with people singing, dancing and generally celebrating together.
“It was the last bit of sunlight and I wanted to capture the crowds before it was too dark.”

Theatresports at Kalk Bay Theatre on Tuesdays Aug 31, 2010

If you feel like having a good giggle on a Tuesday evening, head out to Kalk Bay to experience Theatresports at Kalk Bay Theatre.
Now in its 16th year, Theatresports is recognised as South Africa’s longest-running improvisation theatre show. Each week, two teams of actors compete in a series of impromptu games that are suggested and judged by the audience.
In a Cape Argus review in June this year, entertainment journalist Zane Henry wrote: “There’s no way of knowing what to expect. I witnessed a party attended by a cowboy, an exterminator and a lawnmower. I heard some of the most ridiculous foreign accents. I saw actors corpsing shamefacedly. I laughed till I cramped.”
Kalk Bay Theatre is located at 52 Main Road, Kalk Bay.
From 19h00, theatre-goers can enjoy a pasta dinner before the show at a cost of R100 of adults and R90 for learners, including the cost of the show.
Tickets for just the show cost R50 for adults and R40 for learners. Doors open at 20h10.
For more information, call +27 (0)72 939 3351.

This photograph of Cape Town’s Wheel of Excellence was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Marc De Vries.
Marc says: “Pretty much like anybody else with a camera, I too wanted to capture this 50-metre-wide Wonder Wheel at the entrance to the V&A Waterfront. Ever since the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, I’ve been planning in my mind’s eye how best to shoot the wheel with the Cape Town cityscape beyond. It was only on Tuesday, 10 August, after a long day at the office, that I made my way to this spot along the canal edge in an attempt to capture the image I had visualised.
“For me personally, this particular scene stirs up fond memories of the fan walk, marching with friends among thousands to the watch the Netherlands vs Uruguay semi-final at the V&A Waterfront on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. The World Cup may have come and gone, but the lasting legacy of the spirit and fever felt by all resounds in the hearts of many. We felt it, we were there :-).”

High praise for Cape Town Stadium double-header Aug 30, 2010

Cape Town Stadium has received much praise for hosting a successful Premier Soccer League double-header on Friday, the first event hosted at the stadium since the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
Some 45 000 spectators gathered to watch Orlando Pirates beat new Cape Town team, Vasco Da Gama, 2-1, followed by Ajax Cape Town’s 2-0 victory against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Mark Gleeson, a well-respected soccer commentator and writer, had a great time on Friday evening. According to his News 24 column: “It was some night in Cape Town, a big success and hopefully the start of many more Friday night double-header attractions. From being a spectator backwater just a few years ago, is Cape Town now challenging for the status of the nation’s football capital?”
Carlos Amato of Times Live wrote: “It was a crackling jamboree, punctuated by thunderous Mexican waves, and it’s clear that diski is cool in the Mother City.”
The next PSL match at the stadium will be on Friday, September 17, when Ajax Cape Town host Platinum Stars.
Anyone wishing to experience the magic of the stadium that hosted eight World Cup matches, can either take a tour or even better, attend a live match.

Nina says: “This picture was taken on Sunday, June 20 from Signal Hill. The sea was covered with clouds and the sun was shining above it. It was a lovely day with lovely people. I realised again how beautiful this city I choose to live in is. Thanks Cape Town for this and other special moments.”

Jenny says: “We started at Chapman’s Peak Nek and ended at East Fort. The hike runs virtually parallel to Chapman’s Peak Drive. It is not too strenuous and gives some amazing views over the drive and across into Hout Bay.”

Cape Town weekend highlights, August 27-29 Aug 27, 2010

It’s the end of the month, which means things may be a little extra festive in Cape Town this weekend! According to the South African Weather Service, Friday’s temperature should reach 19 degrees Centigrade and dry, while Saturday should reach 15 degrees Centigrade with a 30% chance of rain. Sunday’s temperature forecast is 17 degrees Centigrade with partly cloudy skies.
There are two big sporting events taking place in the city on Friday evening. The Premier Soccer League double header at Cape Town Stadium kicks of at 18h00 with a match between Vasco da Gama and Orlando Pirates. This will be followed by Ajax Cape Town vs Bloemfontein Celtic. For rugby fans, Western Province host the Cheetahs in a Currie Cup first round match at Newlands. Kick-off is at 19h30.
Tickets for both these events are available at Computicket.
Here are some of the other weekend highlights:
Cape Quarter food promotion
Various restaurants at the Cape Quarter lifestyle shopping centre in Green Point will be offing special promotions until September 30, 2010.
From 16h00 until 19h00 on Friday, August 27, Fairview will be putting on a cheese and wine tasting on The Square.
Within easy walking distance of the iconic Cape Town Stadium, the Cape Quarter is a modern, trendy centre with a variety of eateries on ‘The Piazza’ and ‘The Square’.
Call +27 (0)21 421 1111 for more information.
Marc Lottering - Not in 3D
Popular South African comedian, Marc Lottering, will be performing his latest stand-up act at the Newspace Theatre in Long Street at 20h30 on Friday and Saturday night. If you miss it on the weekend, be sure to catch it any night next week except Monday. Tickets are R80. See our event entry or call +27 (0)21 424 1194 for more information.
Cavendish Square Charity Book Sale
Book lovers are invited to stock up at the Cavendish Square Charity Book Sale this weekend. The sale runs for the entire weekend in the Edgars Court and promises some excellent bargains for bibliophiles. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to 32 charities in and around Cape Town.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
The weather on Sunday is expected to be decent, so a day out at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is highly recommended. This world heritage site is home to thousands of different plant species, a large expanse of lawn, superb views of Table Mountain, as well as trickling streams to add to the serenity.
The Sunday lunch buffet at the Silver Tree Restaurant is excellent value for money and there are plenty of picnic spots for those who enjoy lunching in the great outdoors.
I am blessed in two respects, one is that I work in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and two, I have access to the 17th floor roof of my office building and am thus able to peer down into the city.

I am not a fan of concrete, but we have a fair mix of the old style buildings mingling with the modern modular styles. St George’s Cathedral is an imposing building, a landmark in the political history of our country.

The yellow building on the left is the Cape Sun hotel, flanked by two of our well-known banks.

I have always found the Bo-Kaap to be of interest. This photograph shows how close it is to the city centre and how much a part of the city it is - colourful and rich in character, particularly when the buildings in the area are compared to the modern structures in the foreground.
