Cape Town International Convention Centre, photo courtesy Paul Watson From August 24 to 28 this year, local and international delegates will descend upon the Cape Town International Convention Centre to attend the 16th International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering (ISH). Organised by some of South Africa’s leading universities, the five-day event will bring researchers and engineers together for discussions and presentations. Organiser Jan Reynders says on the symposium website, www.ish2009.org, that the event has stimulated his work and provided him with “a network of men and women who willingly served as mentors and guides”. He hopes that the 2009 ISH delegates will, like him, benefit from their involvement and participation in the symposium.

Hout Bay view – Flickr pic of the day

This stunning landscape was taken by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Paul Tosio. Paul says, “Hout Bay (meaning Wood Bay) is so named because of the forests early settlers found there – some still visible in the extreme upper right-hand corner of this picture. This proved an invaluable source of wood for ship repairs, carpentry etc. “

Fun for kids at Noordhoek Farm Village

Photo courtesy Rob Wallace Safe and very kid-friendly, Noordhoek Farm Village is close enough to Cape Town to make a day of it. Three of the restaurants in the village offer children’s menus, wide-open spaces to run around in, a safe playground, an educational worm farm and – on top of everything – Noordhoek Farm Village offers free kids activities every Saturday between 10h30 and 12h30. These events keep the kids entertained with environmentally based, fun educational programmes and activities.

This beautiful sunrise was captured by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Darby Sawchuk. Darby says, “Last year, I was in Cape Town for a couple weeks on a product shoot with work. It was a hectic schedule which left almost no time for seeing the city. That was a bit of a shame since Cape Town is a captivating place, with a lot to explore.”

Mountain biking at Tokai – Flickr pic of the day

Mountain biking, a fast-paced sport, is hard to capture on camera. But our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Eric Palmer has shot this beautifully. Eric says, “I was asked to get some shots for Morewood Bikes, a local cross-country bike company. One of my good friends, Pierre van der Merwe, is sponsored by them and rides like a machine.”

Over and above the quaint country atmosphere, the Noordhoek area has a lot to offer kids, including restaurants (try the child-friendly Noordhoek Farm Village), a shopping mall (with movies and a Spur), horse-riding and (in neighbouring Kommetjie) camel rides.

Muizenberg sunrise – Flickr pic of the day

This sunrise scene was captured by our Cape Town. Live it. Love it. group member Koeshke. Koeshke says, “If you’ve lived in Cape Town for many years, you tend to become quite blasé about the natural wonder that we are fortunate to live in – until you start looking at it through the eyes of a tourist. Fortunately for us, we have many overseas visitors who force us to take a fresh look at the world around us.”

Post Confederations Cup: Cape Town is ready to welcome the world!

Cape Town may not have been a host city to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, but the city is sharing in the afterglow of the Confederations Cup and getting geared up to host the next major FIFA event in the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the final draw in December 2009. With 2010 just around the corner, South Africa had a lot to prove during the Confederations Cup with regard to our readiness to host the World Cup. Needless to say, it was a resounding success! Cape Town Tourism followed all the action closely. Here are a few of our highlights.

Capture Cape Town’s beauty with a photography course

Photo courtesy Ian Junor Anyone passionate about photography – whether an amateur, professional, or a happy-snap tourist – will tell you that Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, offering a plethora of photographic subject matter, be it the beautiful landscapes, the diverse cultures or the impressive array of fauna and flora. Take advantage of all the Mother City has to offer by taking a photography course from July 10 to 12, 2009 at the beautiful Mimosa Lodge in Montagu – just a two-hour drive from Cape Town.

We’re ready for 2010!

Ke nako – It’s time. Photo courtesy Shine 2010 And so we did it, South Africa hosted the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup ™ with far more compliments offered than apologies given.  Sure there were a few stumbling blocks along the way (depending which park and ride you used) but there is no doubt that we have paved the way to deliver a 2010 World Cup ™ which is set to be one of the most exciting, cosmopolitan and authentically South African sporting events and Football World Cups ever. Over the past few centuries South Africa has unmistakeably demonstrated its ability to not only learn and grow but to deliver on its promises. We are a nation that strives to improve, we foster a culture which strives to grow and our Proudly South African youth are indeed “alive with possibility”.

Whale-watching in Cape Town

A southern right whale frolicking in the sea off Sunny Cove, Cape Town. Photo courtesy Ian Junor Spotting whales is an exhilarating reward for getting out of the house on Cape Town’s chilly days. Blowing, breaching, “sailing” and smacking the surface of the water are some of the things you can expect to see these ocean giants do.

Mzoli’s Place – My first township experience

For a friend’s recent birthday, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to experience another side of Cape Town, an experience that is now firmly placed in my top five favourite things about Cape Town. Sadly, Ratanga had to fall away, but is still held close to my heart. Since early 2003, Mzoli Ngcawuzele’s business has been meat, through which he has transformed a run-of-the-mill butchery into one of the most popular experiences in Cape Town.
