Cape Town’s Eggman finds something to smile about

Gregory da Silva, better known as the Eggman or Eierman, can cheer you up – no matter what kind of day you’re having – with his comic laugh and broad smile. Eggman stands out in a crowd with his 3m-high hat made of eggs and other recycled bits and pieces, weighing up to 27kg, along with his colourful tunic, which represents all the countries on the African continent.

Young jazz pianist refreshes Cape Town musical style

Kyle Shepherd (21), widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most accomplished jazz pianists and composers, will be giving a solo piano concert on Saturday June 27 at Welgemeend in Welgemeend Road, Gardens. The performance begins at 19h30. Shepherd has performed at a number of concerts and festivals in South Africa (including the 2009 Cape Town International Jazz Festival) and abroad with the likes of Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen, Louis Moholo, McCoy Mrubata, Zim Ngqawana and Hilton Schilder.

Thanks to Cape Town Tourism, I had the amazing opportunity to be taken on a personal tour of Green Point Stadium It was awesome to view a super structure being constructed up close.

So when an acquaintance offered me a front-row seat that he had won, I jumped at the prospect.

It’s fynbos season in the Cape

This means that, in a number of areas around Cape Town, you will find an abundance of strikingly beautiful indigenous plants and flowers. Fynbos (meaning “fine bush”) is a group of flora endemic to a small area of South Africa’s Western Cape.

Confederations Cup Semi-Finalists: South Africa, Brazil, Spain and USA

South African fans will be heading back to Ellis Park in droves to support their team in their semi-final against Brazil. Spain will take on USA on Wednesday night in the first Confederations Cup semi-final, and South Africa will be up against Brazil on Thursday night. This after a dramatic Sunday night of soccer, in which USA beat Egypt 3-0 in Rustenburg and Brazil thumped World Champions Italy 3-0 at Loftus in Pretoria. Brazil made winning look easy against Italy, with a double coming from Luis Fabiano, and an own goal from Italian defender Andrea Dossena to seal the fate of the Azzurri. Now Bafana Bafana fans will go back to Ellis Park, where South Africa played to a goaless draw with Iraq in the Confederations Cup opening game, to watch South Africa take on the South American champions.

In the final round of Group A matches, Iraq took on New Zealand. Iraq needed a win to secure their place in the semi-finals, at the expense of South Africa. For the first time possibly in sporting history, South Africans came out in their numbers to support New Zealand. Over 23 000 people watched the game at Ellis Park, Johannesburg.

Cape Town’s art galleries offer a great selection of work by local and international artists. The Association for Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery is a non-profit venture which aims to promote South African and particularly Western Cape artists. The gallery has a partnership with the Spier wine estate, which supports a variety of arts initiatives and has bought the building in which the AVA is housed – 35 Church Street, in the city centre.

South Africa secure first ever Confed Cup win

Photo courtesy Shine 2010 - 2010 World Cup good news In a must-win game for the hosts, South Africa rose to the challenge last night to secure their first ever Confederations Cup win after cruising past a hapless New Zealand side 2-0, thanks to a brace from Bernard Parker. Bafana Bafana started the game well with the returning Steven Pienaar and Orlando Pirates’ Teko Modise’s crisp, incisive passing tearing the All Whites’ defence to tatters.
