The relinquishing of my left shoe dates back to a tradition which began in 19th Century Belgium. If I want to drink the beer, I need to forfeit my left shoe… for a time at least. The tradition started because the glasses were extremely expensive and difficult to replace at the time. It sparked a Belgian custom in which the barman kept the left shoe of patrons until the glass had been returned.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a great place to visit for kids and big kids alike. It’s the only aquarium in the world that shows off species typical in two oceans – the warmer Indian Ocean, which runs along the east side of South Africa, and the cooler Atlantic Ocean, on its western shores. Our man on the ground, event reporter Deon Gurling, was there to record the afternoon of gorgeous outfits, colour, excitement, surprise winners and sunshine at the 2010 J&B Met in Cape Town. Crowds were treated to a great day out and exciting racing. Filly River Jetez won the feature race, beating the favourite and her brother, Pocket Power.
A crowd of around 50 000 cheered as River Jetez won the 33rd J&B Met at Kenilworth. The win was worth R2.5-million for the lucky owners, Marsh Shirtliff and Cedric and Barbara Amm. The filly River Jetez was followed home by Mother Russia, also a filly and trained by Mike de Kock, then Pocket Power, and in fourth place, Fort Vogue.

Last Thursday, January 21, 2010, saw the launch of Cape Town Tourism’s new-look Visitor Information Centre in Burg Street, in Cape Town’s city centre. The lavish event, attended by dignitaries and role-players in the tourism industry and the media, showcased the visitor centre’s stunning new look.

The first ever soccer match at Cape Town Stadium took place between Santos and Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.
In an exciting inaugural match, Santos has stolen the first victory over rivals Ajax Cape Town in the history of the new Cape Town Stadium, in a penalty shootout following a goalless game.
I attended the first soccer game at the Cape Town Stadium. Santos was lucky to win the sudden death penalty shoot out. The game was played beneath an incredibly blue sky and a crowd of 20 000 jubilant spectators. The event went off without a hitch, and it was a privilege to be there on this historic day.
