An organic feast at the Old Biscuit Mill

Photo courtesy Nick Gray The Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock awaits those who rise early on Saturday mornings. Established in 2006 as an organic farmers’ market, it occupies an old Victorian warehouse and features more than 100 specialty traders.  Gastronomes will marvel at the abundance of organic goods. From farm fresh produce and organic cheeses to gourmet sandwiches and decadent confections, every palate will be satisfied. Every Saturday, foodies pour into the market to indulge their taste buds with flavours from around the world. Parisian tarts and crêpes, thin-based pizzas, fragrant curries and organic chocolate will delight both young and old. For those who have worked up a thirst, organic wines and beers are on offer.

Mind-blowing kelp vuvuzelas

Wahabi and Christopher – trained and proficient craft painters The vuvuzela, a favourite at South African soccer matches, seems to be constantly criticised. Yet, despite complaints and requests to ban it, the vuvuzela is likely to be a feature at soccer matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A way for soccer fans to support and encourage their favourite teams – and to create a dramatic atmosphere in the stadium – the instrument is considered an essential part of the South African soccer experience.

We took our staff there for the day and it was really an amazing experience.”

South Africa gets a thumbs up from foreign tourists

Photo courtesy Pet_r World soccer governing body FIFA wasn’t the only one to give South Africa the thumbs up for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. A survey commissioned by Cape Town Tourism has found that Confederations Cup visitors were happy with proceedings too. In fact, an overwhelming majority of the respondents (63%) said they would return for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The study, conducted in partnership with the University of Cape Town, consisted of a survey of 323 foreign tourists who were in South African to attend the soccer games. Most of the respondents were between 19 and 45 years old, with most of these in the 19- to 29-year age bracket. Questionnaires were distributed at stadiums around South Africa (in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Rustenburg and Bloemfontein), as well as at major hotels in Johannesburg.

Hirohiko says, “On a sunny winter day, just before sunset, I was walking in a vineyard in Constantia. This beautiful scene shows the trees catching the sunset light, making the leaves golden. It was a very short moment.”

Dinner – with a dash of inspiration

Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ) is the founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project On Tuesday July 28, join community volunteer organisation Safer Together for dinner and an inspiring address by Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ), founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project. The Broccoli Project works with non-governmental organisation, retailers and suppliers to incentivise the poor. Designed along the lines of customer loyalty programmes, the project rewards those who attend skills development workshops and undergo medical screening for HIV, for example, with vouchers for food and shelter. According to the project website, it “rewards life-affirming actions”.

Get up close and personal with sharks

Photo courtesy Hermanus Backpackers Diving with sharks is a huge thrill, but at least having something between you and the shark makes the experience less hazardous. Cage diving in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, gives adrenaline junkies the opportunity to dive with the great white shark. The great white reaches lengths of 4.5m (15ft), making it the largest predatory fish. It is on the endangered species list, so seeing it in its natural environment is an experience not to be missed.

When I saw these huge waves flooding the breakwater I made an immediate U-turn and drove into the harbour precinct. It was a humbling experience to observe and hear the absolute power of nature in action.”

Travel+Leisure magazine this week announced the results of its 14th annual World’s Best poll, in which readers rate the world’s best cities, islands, hotels, cruises and airlines. This publication is regarded as one of the world’s leading travel lifestyle magazines, with a monthly circulation of almost one million readers internationally.

Our national anthem: Learn it. Love it. Live it.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get, standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow South Africans, singing our national anthem at the start of a sports match. As thousands of voices swell together with pride, it’s unlikely that people will notice if you gloss over a few of the more difficult lines. You know what – they’re probably doing the same thing!

Table Mountain tops Everest

Photo courtesy Warren Rohner Table Mountain is one step closer to being named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. South Africa’s iconic mountain – the country’s only official nominee – has been voted as one of the top 77 sites selected from over 261 participants from around the globe. The much-loved landmark beat fellow category contenders Mount Everest, K2 and Mount Fiji in round two of the international competition, which relied solely on votes from the public. Table Mountain needed to be ranked in the top 11 of its category, mountains and volcanoes. Other categories include seascapes, lakes, islands, ice formations, waterfalls and forests.

Practising ubuntu in the Mother City – a Cape Town Tourism photo essay

The philosophy of ubuntu – humanness – explains a lot about African thinking and behaviour. It can be illustrated in the following way: if you have two cows, and the milk from the first cow is sufficient to feed you and your family, ubuntu requires you to give the milk from your second cow to those who need it. Ubuntu doesn’t require you to give away the cow – only what you can give, while still keeping enough for yourself. The philosophy is about caring and sharing – your time, your skills, who you are and what you can do for your community.

Family escapes in the Cederberg

Bushmans Kloof is in the Cederberg and has one of the world’s largest open-air rock art galleries. Children get to explore these (among all the other discoveries of nature) during the Family Affair escapes offered during school holidays.

Cape Town to be unveiled at National Wedding Show in London, October 2 – 4 2009

Cape Town Tourism, in conjunction with Celebration House – Cape Town’s unique wedding information centre – will be promoting the beautiful Mother City as the perfect wedding and honeymoon destination at the National Wedding Show in London in October 2009.

Ubuntu Festival celebrates diversity and Mandela

July 18 will see the launch of Mandela Day, a celebration of the life and work of South Africa’s beloved former president. The event coincides with Mandela’s 91st birthday and is organised by 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. According to www.mandeladay.com, the global event is an opportunity for citizens of the world to “to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them”. Events that celebrate Mandela’s legacy will be held across the globe on July 18, with New York City as the centre of all activity.
