Celebrate Women’s Day with a special film at the Iziko South African Museum

There’s one coming up soon: a film called Iron Ladies of Liberia will be screened at the Iziko South African Museum in central Cape Town at 13h00 on August 9, 2009 – National Women’s Day. It will also be shown on August 10, at 13h00. Wathint’ abafazi wathint’ imbokodo! The phrase, “you strike a woman, you strike a rock”, tells us of the strength, spirit and courage that African women possess.

For the uninitiated, the vuvuzela is a plastic horn usually blown by football fans at matches. During the 2009 Confederations Cup recently, FIFA received complaints from some commentators and international players who want the horns banned during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

I’ve heard from a reliable source that the magnificent flowers on the west coast and in Namaqualand are already rearing their orange, white, pink, purple and yellow heads. The winter rains have started to turn the burned vegetation against Table Mountain into a green patchwork quilt.

The Rat Pack swings in to Long Street

Photo courtesy Honey Bunny The originals took Hollywood and Las Vegas by storm in the mid-1960s; now the Rat Pack is bringing swagger and class to Cape Town this winter on August 3-22, 2009 at the Newspace One Theatre. You can expect to see Sammy, played by Dantanio Goodman, Dean, played by Matthew Stewardson, and Ol’ Blue Eyes, performed by American impersonator Patrick Tobin. Audiences can look forward to hearing songs such as I Only Have Eyes for You and Fly Me to the Moon performed by a live band.

Cape Town tops in international tourism survey

The V&A Waterfront, photo courtesy slack12 In a recent survey conducted by SA Tourism Update magazine, Cape Town emerged at the top of the list of attractions in Southern Africa. One hundred overseas tour operators participated in the survey, which was completed last week, including 33 from North America, 25 from the UK, 16 from Germany and 44 from the rest of Europe.
