Fish Hoek beach, photo courtesy Ian Junor It was quite weird and slightly frightening hearing about the shark attack on Fish Hoek beach. Six years ago I was in Perth when a shark appeared in the middle of a surfski school class. The last fatal shark attack on Fish Hoek beach had happened just weeks before, in November. I was shocked and surprised, as it was totally unexpected and out of the ordinary.

The vuvuzela, much like the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory in South Africa, is a unifying force for South Africans. In the case of the vuvuzela, the common purpose appears to be blowing as loudly as possible into a plastic tube that, when played correctly, sounds like a sheep being “waterboarded” by a particularly enthusiastic US marine.

The beautiful Vergelegen wine estate.
