Cape Town weighs up economic impact of visiting cruise liner

Cape Town Tourism has reacted with caution to the news that Dubai World Constituency’s cruise ship, the QE2, is destined for Cape Town Harbour as a floating hotel with an 18-month residency over the 2010 FIFA World Cup period.
The national Department of Tourism has decided not to oppose the application for the berthing and the Transnet Board and the National Ports Authority will now make a final determination.

To get to the final stop of the Coffeebeans Routes soccer safari, we cruised through Cape Town’s southern suburbs and into the Philippi farming area, coming to a stop at a nondescript security gate. On the other side, I was to find the real gem of the day.

Cape Town Tourism invited the Kelp Environmental Learning Project (KELP) to be part of our Shout Brigade at the Ubuntu Festival where we continued with our citizen activations by promoting the Live it! Love it! LOUDER! Campaign.
Cape Town Tourism endorses the KELP vuvuzelas as they meet the requirements of our social responsibility commitment to the World Cup and help us to create hype and excitement in Cape Town by providing a more creative and uniquely Capetonian noise-making device.
Footballs for Fun

As a host city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Cape Town is doing everything it can to ensure not only that the World Cup itself is a resounding success, but also that the citizens of the Mother City continue to reap the benefits long after it’s over.
As part of this plan, Cape Town Tourism supports the Footballs for Fun initiative. According to their website, Footballs for Fun is “a charity that aims to get 100 000 footballs to the children of Africa by 2010 ... while at the same time generating funds to support charities working for the welfare of children in Africa.”

The annual Urban Voices Poetry Festival draws huge crowds and this year promises to be no different.
The festival, which takes place on July 26 in Cape Town, boasts local and international poets and is guaranteed to feature inspiring and innovative spoken-word performances.

Ajax Cape Town
The next stop on our Coffeebeans Routes soccer tour was Premier Soccer League side Ajax Cape Town’s facilities. Ajax, I discovered, was the first franchised professional soccer team in the world.

Table Mountain shortlisted for “Seven Wonders” spot

Table Mountain has made it into the final round of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” contest, beating the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Azure Window in Malta and the Rock of Aphrodite in Cyprus for a spot on the shortlist.
The top 28 natural wonders from around the world were announced on Tuesday July 21 by the Switzerland-based New7Wonders Foundation. The finalists include legendary sites such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Grand Canyon in the US, the Amazon in South America – and Table Mountain.

A mouth-watering winter weekend

Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Cape Town should retreat to Breedekloof, less than an hour’s drive from the city. Great for a relaxing weekend away, the region offers a particularly perfect winter escape on July 24 and 25, when the annual Breedekloof Soetes and Soup weekend takes place.
More than 15 wineries in the Breedekloof region will participate in the weekend’s festivities, which will feature wine tastings, hearty soups, jewellery and art exhibitions and fun events for children and adults alike.

Ubuntu Festival entertains Cape Town crowds
Cape Town celebrated the birthday of Nelson Mandela with the Ubuntu Festival. It was a weekend filled with music and entertainment for the crowds that descended on the city centre.
The music lineup included great Capetonian artists like The Rockets, CODA, Tucan Tucan, Chad Saaiman and Jody Williams. Playing at the jazz sessions were the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, Robbie Jansen and Jimmy Dludlu.
Soccer safari: part one
This week, I went on a Coffeebeans Routes’ soccer safari. It was an awesome experience. We visited three soccer sites in the city, exploring the sport’s history and culture in Cape Town.
We started on Signal Hill, looking down on Green Point Stadium (Cape Town’s 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium), took a tour of South African Premier Soccer League team Ajax Cape Town’s base and ended at the training camp of the South African Homeless Street Soccer team.

Assadmd says, “I was brought up in Kenya and studied in the Czech Republic for my medical degree, but the European climate didn’t suit me. So when it came to my postgraduate studies in orthopaedic surgery, I chose Cape Town in South Africa for its renowned universities.”

I am very patriotic and love South Africa, the Western Cape and Cape Town, in particular. My greatest wish is for the preservation of Cape Town’s architecture, culture and environs. May future generations care for the City.

“This photo was taken in early December 2008 at Big Bay in Table View. We were on our way back home from Melkbosstrand and stopped at Big Bay to try and get a few photos before the sun faded away. Unfortunately, there was not much swell that day and this was one of the few action shots I managed to capture,” Shaun says.
Knysna Half Marathon

Even though there is so much to do in Cape Town, it never hurts to sneak out to South Africa’s other gems for some weekend thrills every once in a while. My last venture out of Cape Town was to take part in the Knysna Half Marathon.
I got into running towards the end of last year, which quickly turned into the start of a fresh addiction – one that makes you feel, eat and look better than you did when you started, which is quite rare.
