Ajax Cape Town The next stop on our Coffeebeans Routes soccer tour was Premier Soccer League side Ajax Cape Town’s facilities. Ajax, I discovered, was the first franchised professional soccer team in the world.

Table Mountain shortlisted for “Seven Wonders” spot

Photo courtesy Andrew Miller Table Mountain has made it into the final round of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” contest, beating the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Azure Window in Malta and the Rock of Aphrodite in Cyprus for a spot on the shortlist. The top 28 natural wonders from around the world were announced on Tuesday July 21 by the Switzerland-based New7Wonders Foundation. The finalists include legendary sites such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Grand Canyon in the US, the Amazon in South America – and Table Mountain.

A mouth-watering winter weekend

The beautiful Breedekloof, photo courtesy Geof Wilson Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Cape Town should retreat to Breedekloof, less than an hour’s drive from the city. Great for a relaxing weekend away, the region offers a particularly perfect winter escape on July 24 and 25, when the annual Breedekloof Soetes and Soup weekend takes place. More than 15 wineries in the Breedekloof region will participate in the weekend’s festivities, which will feature wine tastings, hearty soups, jewellery and art exhibitions and fun events for children and adults alike.

Ubuntu Festival entertains Cape Town crowds

Cape Town celebrated the birthday of Nelson Mandela with the Ubuntu Festival. It was a weekend filled with music and entertainment for the crowds that descended on the city centre. The music lineup included great Capetonian artists like The Rockets, CODA, Tucan Tucan, Chad Saaiman and Jody Williams. Playing at the jazz sessions were the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, Robbie Jansen and Jimmy Dludlu.

Soccer safari: part one

This week, I went on a Coffeebeans Routes’ soccer safari. It was an awesome experience. We visited three soccer sites in the city, exploring the sport’s history and culture in Cape Town. We started on Signal Hill, looking down on Green Point Stadium (Cape Town’s 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium), took a tour of South African Premier Soccer League team Ajax Cape Town’s base and ended at the training camp of the South African Homeless Street Soccer team.

I am very patriotic and love South Africa, the Western Cape and Cape Town, in particular. My greatest wish is for the preservation of Cape Town’s architecture, culture and environs. May future generations care for the City.

We were on our way back home from Melkbosstrand and stopped at Big Bay to try and get a few photos before the sun faded away. Unfortunately, there was not much swell that day and this was one of the few action shots I managed to capture,” Shaun says.

Knysna Half Marathon

Photo courtesy www.oysterfestival.co.za/ Even though there is so much to do in Cape Town, it never hurts to sneak out to South Africa’s other gems for some weekend thrills every once in a while. My last venture out of Cape Town was to take part in the Knysna Half Marathon. I got into running towards the end of last year, which quickly turned into the start of a fresh addiction – one that makes you feel, eat and look better than you did when you started, which is quite rare.

An organic feast at the Old Biscuit Mill

Established in 2006 as an organic farmers’ market, it occupies an old Victorian warehouse and features more than 100 specialty traders.  Gastronomes will marvel at the abundance of organic goods. From farm fresh produce and organic cheeses to gourmet sandwiches and decadent confections, every palate will be satisfied. Every Saturday, foodies pour into the market to indulge their taste buds with flavours from around the world. Parisian tarts and crêpes, thin-based pizzas, fragrant curries and organic chocolate will delight both young and old. For those who have worked up a thirst, organic wines and beers are on offer.

Mind-blowing kelp vuvuzelas

Wahabi and Christopher – trained and proficient craft painters The vuvuzela, a favourite at South African soccer matches, seems to be constantly criticised. Yet, despite complaints and requests to ban it, the vuvuzela is likely to be a feature at soccer matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A way for soccer fans to support and encourage their favourite teams – and to create a dramatic atmosphere in the stadium – the instrument is considered an essential part of the South African soccer experience.

We took our staff there for the day and it was really an amazing experience.”

South Africa gets a thumbs up from foreign tourists

Cape Point: Cape Town’s natural beauty was cited as one of the most appealing aspects of the Mother City. Photo courtesy Pet_r World soccer governing body FIFA wasn’t the only one to give South Africa the thumbs up for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. A survey commissioned by Cape Town Tourism has found that Confederations Cup visitors were happy with proceedings too. In fact, an overwhelming majority of the respondents (63%) said they would return for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The study, conducted in partnership with the University of Cape Town, consisted of a survey of 323 foreign tourists who were in South African to attend the soccer games. Most of the respondents were between 19 and 45 years old, with most of these in the 19- to 29-year age bracket. Questionnaires were distributed at stadiums around South Africa (in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Rustenburg and Bloemfontein), as well as at major hotels in Johannesburg.

Changing seasons in Constantia – Flickr pic of the day

Hirohiko says, “On a sunny winter day, just before sunset, I was walking in a vineyard in Constantia. This beautiful scene shows the trees catching the sunset light, making the leaves golden. Dinner – with a dash of inspiration

Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ) is the founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project On Tuesday July 28, join community volunteer organisation Safer Together for dinner and an inspiring address by Mark Anthony Zimmermann (aka MaZ), founder of the award-winning poverty-alleviation programme, The Broccoli Project. The Broccoli Project works with non-governmental organisation, retailers and suppliers to incentivise the poor. Designed along the lines of customer loyalty programmes, the project rewards those who attend skills development workshops and undergo medical screening for HIV, for example, with vouchers for food and shelter. According to the project website, it “rewards life-affirming actions”.

Get up close and personal with sharks

Photo courtesy Hermanus Backpackers Diving with sharks is a huge thrill, but at least having something between you and the shark makes the experience less hazardous. Cage diving in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, gives adrenaline junkies the opportunity to dive with the great white shark. The great white reaches lengths of 4.5m (15ft), making it the largest predatory fish. It is on the endangered species list, so seeing it in its natural environment is an experience not to be missed.
