Big summer events in Cape Town: Road closures you need to know of

December is upon us and the city centre is about to become a hive of activity. There are a number of big events to look out for and with those events come road closures. We bring you all the vital information to keep you busy with the fun, but also free of the gridlock. Here’s a round-up of what we know so far, but watch this space and follow us on Twitter @lovecapetown for updates.

A Craft Beer Guide to Cape Town

The rise of craft beers in Cape Town has been rapid. Capetonians will no longer assault their gullets with mass-produces lagers. They want variety and they want quality. I spoke to Martin Tucker, owner of The Beer Merchant, and one of the organisers of the Cape Town Festival of Beer, to get a better understanding of craft beer around the city. Basically I wanted a guide on what the Mother City has on tap. He broke the market down into three different categories: breweries, tap rooms and places.

What to do on a Sunday in Cape Town?

I know - silly question isn’t it? Naturally there are always loads of things to do in Cape Town on a Sunday, especially when that Sunday is a summery one. I could join the rest of my running fraternity and have an early morning jog alongside the twisty ocean-flanked road between Seapoint and Camps Bay, while drinking in the incredibly beautiful views. I could meander up the road from my house in Woodstock, stop for the Sunday papers and pick up some still-warm, dripping with syrup and smothered in coconut ‘koeksiesters’ (a Cape Malay donut-like treat) to have with my Field Office coffee. And most importantly, I could indulge in one of my absolute favourite Sunday brunch-time pursuits - I could head to the Winchester Mansions Hotel for their weekly Sunday Jazz brunch.

Exploring Tulbagh: Some hidden gems

Just 90-minutes’ drive outside of Cape Town, deep in the Cape Winelands, lies the hidden gem that is Tulbagh; a sleepy rural village nestled in a mountainous valley, perfect for weekend getaways regardless of the season. With its natural beauty and rich history, Tulbagh is just aching to be discovered and explored. With a wealth of activities to take part in and loads of unique places to stay, here are some of my favourite Tulbagh gems:

30 Seconds in the Mother City

Cape Town played host to yet another sold-out show this past weekend with 30 Seconds to Mars packing the Grand West Casino on Sunday night. Frontman Jared Leto may not have been quite as active as fellow singer John Legend, but he still managed to snap a couple of pics – and post a video - to Instagram, chronicling his time in the Mother City. To be fair, the group didn’t spent quite as long in town as the R&B crooner, but it’s still pretty clear that the city worked its magic on Leto.

Free Wi-Fi planned for MyCiti buses

Commuters on the MyCITI rapid bus service will have more reason to jump on board with the City of Cape Town planning to offer free Wi-Fi. According to a report on BDLive, the city is conducting a pilot project which will allow access to the Wi-Fi while travelling or waiting at various stations in and around Cape Town. The news comes on the back of the city’s announcement on Thursday that it has entered into a partnership with Orange Wi-Fi service to provide Wi-Fi to people living in parts of Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain.

Legend-ary shots in the Mother City

R&B singer John Legend was a hit in Cape Town with three sold-out shows and it looks like the Mother City left its mark on him as well. The legendary crooner and his wife – model Chrissy Teigen – were posting up on storm on Instagram as they captured their travels in the city this week, from yacht trips and show-time selfies, to more intimate moments on tour. John, you legend, thanks for coming, and hopefully we see you again soon!

SunStar shines brightly on Signal Hill

Last night the SunStar Beacon of Hope was unveiled and lit up on Signal Hill. And it looks pretty spectacular. Designed by Christopher Swift and part of the World Design Capital initiatives, the SunStar was made with pieces of the fencing from Robben Island. Standing 24 metres high, this outdoor art installation will stay on Signal Hill for about six months before it’s moved, possibly to one of the properties of Sun International, who funded the piece.

Cape Town Jazz Festival is on its way!

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is a huge annual event that brings together top-class local and international jazz acts for the entertainment of those in the Mother City. It’s an event that people travel for and an event where if you’re not quick off the mark for tickets, you stand a good chance of missing out. Some of the line-up for the 2015 festival has just been announced and judging by the talent, the next Cape Town International Jazz Festival looks all set to impress the crowds.
