Township tour – a Cape Town Tourism Flickr photo essay

I tend not to stick with any particular genre when out with my camera. If I see something I like, I’ll shoot it. This approach to photography suits Cape Town perfectly, as I found out while visiting friends last July. Such diversity of cultures opens up so many photographic opportunities.

Gugulethu Wine Festival 2011 brings vibrant people together

When diverse, vibrant people and good wine come together, you know you’re in for a good time. Never was this more apparent than at the inaugural Gugulethu Wine Festival, on the rooftop of the Gugulethu Square Mall, on May 27 and 28, 2011. From the pumping beats supplied by soulful Heart 104.9FM to the red carpet entrance and plenty of premier wine stands to quench everyone’s thirst, the Gugs fest organisers pulled out all of the stops to ensure their guests had a good time.

The face of fun in Cape Town – Video

Student Simon Leigh filmed this footage during his 2012 Easter holiday in Cape Town, and he turned the fun levels to 11. Take an inside look at backstage work at the Two Oceans Aquarium (where you too can scuba with sharks, stingrays, yellowtail, turtles ...), his hike up our New7Wonder of Nature Table Mountain, a ride in the cable car, a splash into the chilly Atlantic Ocean at Clifton Fourth beach (respect!), and general can’t-match-that Cape Town experiences.

Cape Town winters are cool for adrenaline junkies

An active and outdoor lifestyle has long been part of the Cape Town mindset, and locals know Cape Town is often at its verdant best during winter, when cooler days, lush vegetation and lively seas become the backdrop for an adventure playground. In winter, conditions are perfect for kite-surfing, wind-surfing, board-surfing and extreme wave-surfing, as well as paragliding, abseiling, helicopter flips and skydiving. If you’re happier with your feet on the ground, the city’s mountainous landscape, nature trails and golf courses promise to keep you occupied. Here are some of the great activities in Cape Town during winter.

(Hand) Made in Cape Town

We can finally say it; hipsters have changed the world. They might not know it, or even care, but these counter-culture kids helped steer a global movement – one that lauds responsible consumerism – to far beyond what was once, a fad.

Cape Town design districts

Cape Town’s design districts range from the bohemian Long Street to the trendy East Central Precinct, and quaint seaside Kalk Bay to Victorian Wynberg. Our hometown teems with creatively designed neighbourhoods. Home to innovations such as the Freeworld Design Centre and the Mutual Building in the CBD, and Etafeni Centre in Nyanga, Cape Town is a showcase of design we can be proud of.

Mark Shuttleworth: “Creativity happens on the boundaries”

To the rest of the world, Ubuntu Foundation founder Mark Shuttleworth is “space tourist” first, “entrepreneur” second and “open source warrior” third. But to South Africans, he is a prized export, boldly going where no African has gone before, championing innovation and making science hip. Cape Town Tourism had the chance to meet Shuttleworth for some face time at last month’s Design Indaba, and we quizzed him about Cape Town’s bid to become the 2014 World Design Capital, about great design and about his feelings for the Mother City.

An open apology to the Parlotones from a four-legged Capetonian

Like most Parlotones fans, I was horrified at the prospect of my favourite band relocating to LA. We will no longer see them at festivals or shows, and are losing a special talent to the US. Thus, when I saw The Parlotones featured in the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts line-up for Sunday 13 January, 2013, I jumped at the opportunity to book tickets!

J&B Met 2009 – all the action!

The J&B Met is the social event of the year with many celebs out and about, dressed to impress. The place to find them? Well, the J&B Met Marquee of course… The J&B Marquee consists of a main hall, three adjacent marquees and facilities to powder your nose (complete with mirrors and hair products for the ladies). The selection of music artists was great; fun and vibey tunes got people on their feet and having a lekker jol in the main hall.
