Exploring South Africa on a motorcycle with Kaapstad Tours

It isn’t every day that you meet a dashing English biker with a passion for Cape Town who is determined to travel thousands of kilometres through South Africa and explore its national parks. So naturally I was impressed and intrigued by Alex Jackson when we met recently for coffee to discuss his travel plans.

Where Would You Rather Be Wednesdays: top 10 places to be

You know what, Mother City lovers? You sure know how to show a writer some love … I mean, I put out one simple request for you to tell me where you would rather be on a Wednesday in Cape Town, and not only did you respond in your thousands but boy, did you blow my mind with suggestions!

The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2013: preparing for a ride less ordinary

It is that time of year again – the clock is winding down to the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 10 March, 2013, and the kilometres are adding up on our bike and trailer. After negotiations with the organisers, the rules were altered and Damian Gower, my 14-year-old son who is quadriplegic, will be able to participate – towed in a trailer attached to my bike. We will be riding in support of the Chaeli Campaign, to raise funds and awareness.

Put the Mother City on the world’s Biggest, Baddest Bucket List

As locals, we already know that Cape Town, our inspirational hometown, should be at the top of every traveller’s bucket list. But what if you could win an all-expenses-paid, six-month trip to six continents – and US$50 000 on your return home, for proving it?

Morning has broken in Cape Town – a photo essay

It’s the start of a new day in Cape Town, and all over the Cape Peninsula people are starting to stir. The Mother City is beautiful at any time of the day, but particularly so at sunrise, when it is bathed in glorious hues of pink, orange and gold.

Romantic Proposals at Cape Point, the Tip of Africa

The thing about getting hitched, these days, is that - thanks to a generation of over-zealous romantics, and a deluge of big-budget tear-jerking romantic comedies - going down on one knee over a pint at your local pub just isn’t going to cut it. Apparently a casual question around the Sunday morning breakfast table is also considered unacceptable these days.

Girls’ getaways in Cape Town for the non-Valentine’s Day celebrators

If the sight of a cherub shooting arrows at loved-up couples and the over-the-top teddy bears and hearts displays in retail stores makes you see red, chances are you’re not in the mood to celebrate Valentine’s Day … at least not in the traditional sense. I understand, Mother City fans, I do, which is why I’ve compiled a list of fabulous getaway spots for us singletons to see this commercialised holiday through.

Ten good reasons to go golfing around Cape Town

Golf in South Africa began in 1885 when Lieutenant-General Sir Henry D’Oyley Torrens, commander of the British garrison stationed in the Cape founded the Royal Cape Golf Club. Well over a century later the course has stood the test of time and remains one of the Cape’s premier golfing destinations. A relatively flat course, it weaves through avenues of trees and water features which add to the appeal and challenge of the game.
