An open apology to the Parlotones from a four-legged Capetonian

Like most Parlotones fans, I was horrified at the prospect of my favourite band relocating to LA. We will no longer see them at festivals or shows, and are losing a special talent to the US. Thus, when I saw The Parlotones featured in the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts line-up for Sunday 13 January, 2013, I jumped at the opportunity to book tickets!

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden: A paradise of plants and flowers in photos

The poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “the Earth laughs in flowers”. If this is true, then the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden must be one of the happiest places on Earth.

Visit Ceres – the ‘Eden of the Cape’

Often referred to as “the Eden of the Cape”, the town of Ceres is world famous for its exceptional deciduous fruit production. Fruit tours present a great way to appreciate the journey from tree to table, while sampling fresh fruit along the way.

Capturing Cape Point: A photo essay

For years the beauty of Cape Point, Africa’s most south-westerly tip, has captured travellers, nature lovers and adventurers.

48 hours in Cape Town: 5 things to do

Cape Town is not only a great value-for-money destination, it also offers good value for time. You can see and do so much in a relatively short time, if that’s all you have. Here are some things to do if you have as little as 48 hours in Cape Town.

Summer restaurants with a view

It’s no secret that Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world so why waste time not taking in the spectacular sea, mountain and city views. Here’s how you are going to be spoilt for choice…

Braai, braai, braai your boerie…

Ask any South African, and they will tell you that the braai – or barbeque – is a part of South African culture. So much so, in fact, that 24 September (Heritage Day) is now also popularly known as National Braai Day.

Sandy Bay – the only place to hang out in Cape Town this summer

Sandy Bay is the only naturist beach in Cape Town, and attracts people of all shapes and sizes (so be prepared). “Naturist” is, of course, another word for “nudist” that people use when they don’t wish to get into any trouble.

Hello, Darling – photos of a West Coast love affair

Head north out of Cape Town on the R27, then take the R307 turn off and drive for around 70km, and you’ll arrive in quaint Darling – a picturesque village in the heart of the West Coast. A day trip to this idyllic community of vineyards and canola fields is a must for city slickers looking for a change of scenery.

The best hiking routes in Cape Town

There’s no doubt that one of the nicest activities to indulge in is a good hike, and what better place to walking up a mountain, through great fynbos or along the coast than Cape Town?

A week of free fun in Cape Town

Imagine it’s January 1, 2013. You’ve had a hectic week on holiday in Cape Town – exploring the winelands , shopping at the V&A Waterfront, wining and dining in Camps Bay and catching all the sights and sounds of the city on the City Sightseeing Bus.

Kiteboarding Big Bay’s windy strip – Charlie Browners love it

What’s not to love? Big Bay is a gorgeous stretch of surf along Cape Town’s north coast (sandwiched between Melkbosstrand and Blouberg’s Kite Beach). It delivers daily side shore winds that are near perfect for launch, topped with incredible views of Table Mountain.

Beach culture in Cape Town

There is no end to Cape Town’s white, sandy, sun-kissed beaches as they stretch along the Peninsula, circling the coast of Cape Town. For a cosmopolitan city boasting a world-famous flat-topped mountain and which is sandwiched between two oceans and three coastlines, it’s no wonder Cape Town has been awarded a number of titles.

Cape Town in summer – no better place to be

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and there is no better place to be this summer.

Come to Cape Town, where life’s (really) a beach

What happens when you ask about 800 000 seasoned globetrotters to vote for their best beach destination in Africa? Naturally, Cape Town comes out tops. Voted the favourite beach holiday hotspot on the continent, and with good reason, Cape Town’s sandy shores are renowned for their global appeal. But just what is it that makes Cape Town’s coastline so charming?

My top three weekend picks in Cape Town

While the onset of winter this past week has made many of us head for the duvet and television remote, the weekend is here and it’s time to head out and have a little fun. Cape Town knows how to warm up in winter and, with an array of events to choose from this weekend, June 8 to 10, I’m sure I’ll see many of you donning your glad rags and getting out and about.

Cape Town township tour – discover the magic

Township tours are a great way to explore the city’s vibrant informal settlements and interact with local residents. With anything from a rundown of the history of the area, city and country, to tasting home-cooked meals, visitors will return home with a broader knowledge of the city and its inhabitants, having experienced a lesser-known side of Cape Town.

Well-connected coffee spots in Cape Town

There’s nothing like enjoying a great cappuccino while catching up on your emails in one of Cape Town’s trendy coffee shops-cum-restaurants. Although the main attraction is, without doubt, the hot coffee and tasty food, customers are encouraged to take advantage of the FREE Wi-Fi service on offer while topping up caffeine levels.
