Today is Africa Day, in commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, which became the African Union in 2002. Although not a public holiday in South Africa, the day is still recognised as an important celebration of African unity. This year will be the 50th celebration of Africa Day. -

Inspired by Bogota’s Ciclovia and projects in other cities like San Francisco and Jakarta, Open Streets in Observatory will see the usually traffic-congested Lower Main Road collectively transformed from a car-dominated road to a people-friendly public space. -

J&B Met in full colour: photos
Our man on the ground, event reporter Deon Gurling, was there to record the afternoon of gorgeous outfits, colour, excitement, surprise winners and sunshine at the 2010 J&B Met in Cape Town.
Crowds were treated to a great day out and exciting racing. Filly River Jetez won the feature race, beating the favourite and her brother, Pocket Power.
Mad Max 4: Fury Road to film in Cape Town
Filming of the post-apocalyptic action adventure epic Mad Max 4: Fury Road is set to take place in Cape Town later this year – according to unverified reports.
The film will star South African-born Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, as well as Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises, Inception) and is directed by Academy Award winner George Miller (Happy Feet, Babe, Mad Max trilogy).

As lovers celebrated Valentine’s Day in February, the city of Cape Town proudly launched the Green Point Urban Park to the public.
Situated in Green Point next to the Cape Town Stadium, which was used for the FIFA 2010 World Cup™, the multipurpose 10.5 hectare park is open seven days a week from 07h00 to 19h00.

Cape Town has done it again, scooping Top prize in Travel + Leisure’s annual online poll of best destinations and establishments in the world.
Cape Town was awarded the the accolade of the World’s Top City in Africa and the Middle East in the 2012 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards as well as being ranked fourth overall in Top 10 Cities list. Additionally, Cape Town’s The One&Only Hotel was ranked as the Top Hotel in Africa & Middle East.

Roxette rocks Cape Town on first night in South Africa
Last night, May 8, 2011, Swedish super-group Roxette kicked off the South African leg of their Charm School world tour at the GrandArena at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. This was the first of three sold out shows to be held in Cape Town this week and marked 16 years since Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle last played in South Africa.

The heated search for Miss Bollywood IPL South Africa now enters its final stages, as the field of Bollywood beauties has been whittled down to 16 hopefuls.
The competition was launched at the start of the DLF IPL tournament and 46 contestants were chosen (one from each match). After much frenzied voting last weekend on the official IPL website, 16 contestants have been chosen to go through to the finals.
U2 Cape Town Concert: Tickets go on sale this weekend
Big Concerts and partners 94.5 Kfm have confirmed that Irish group U2 are set to rock Cape Town Stadium on Friday, February 18, 2011 and 72 000 tickets for this music extravaganza will go on sale from Saturday, October 23.

Cape Minstrel Carnival and road-closure information
The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town’s longest-running street party and parade, which takes place every year on January 2.
Historically January 2 was the one day Cape slaves were given off each year. Called Tweede Nuwe Jaar (“second new year”), it is a colourful celebration of our history and sees minstrels, dancers, performers and marching bands performing on the streets of Cape Town.
