Playing popular tunes, Cape minstrel troupe after troupe walk down Darling Street in the Cape Town city centre to welcome in the new year, revelling in the perfect Cape summer weather. The Minstrel Carnival is one of the most popular events on the calendar and is watched by thousands of people every year. It's also called Tweede Nuwe Jaar, which means "Second New Year" in Afrikaans, because it traditionally takes place on January 2.

South Africans will celebrate a long weekend this weekend with Heritage Day taking place on Monday September 24, 2012, and Capetonians are ready to celebrate the day, and their heritage, with vigour. So excited are locals that Heritage Week celebrations, hosted by the City of Cape Town and various partners, have already been taking place all over the city as part of the in_herit Festival.
The giant Wheel of excellence is a first for Cape Town and South Africa and is a unique way to savour panoramic bird’s-eye views of Cape Town, Paarl, Table Mountain and Robben Island. The V&A Waterfront is hosting with a series of refreshing experiences and activities from September to November 30, 2012 as part of its Spring campaign.
While the onset of winter this past week has made many of us head for the duvet and television remote, the weekend is here and it’s time to head out and have a little fun. Township tours are a great way to explore the city’s vibrant informal settlements and interact with local residents. With anything from a rundown of the history of the area, city and country, to tasting home-cooked meals, visitors will return home with a broader knowledge of the city and its inhabitants, having experienced a lesser-known side of Cape Town.
