Why Rob Vember loves Cape Town
Rob Vember is a radio DJ and proud Capetonian. He grew up in Cape Town and studied in Grahamstown, where, working at the campus station, he was bitten by the radio bug. Returning to the Mother City to join the DJ line-up on Heart FM, he then made the move to Johannesburg to become part of the 5FM team, where he has been for the last few years. He recently made the move back home to continue presenting his weekday show from 5FM’s Cape Town studios. We asked him what he loves about the city. -

2013 Cape Minstrels on the march – photos and video
Playing popular tunes, Cape minstrel troupe after troupe walk down Darling Street in the Cape Town city centre to welcome in the new year, revelling in the perfect Cape summer weather.
The Minstrel Carnival is one of the most popular events on the calendar and is watched by thousands of people every year. It's also called Tweede Nuwe Jaar, which means "Second New Year" in Afrikaans, because it traditionally takes place on January 2.

Cape Minstrel Carnival and road-closure information
The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town’s longest-running street party and parade, which takes place every year on January 2.
Historically January 2 was the one day Cape slaves were given off each year. Called Tweede Nuwe Jaar (“second new year”), it is a colourful celebration of our history and sees minstrels, dancers, performers and marching bands performing on the streets of Cape Town.
