Today is Africa Day, in commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, which became the African Union in 2002. Although not a public holiday in South Africa, the day is still recognised as an important celebration of African unity. This year will be the 50th celebration of Africa Day. -

This Africa Day, Cape Town’s vibrant locals and visitors will be taking to the streets ... the Opens Streets in Observatory, that is, on Saturday May 25, 2013. Inspired by Bogota’s Ciclovia and projects in other cities like San Francisco and Jakarta, Open Streets in Observatory will see the usually traffic-congested Lower Main Road collectively transformed from a car-dominated road to a people-friendly public space. -

The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2013: preparing for a ride less ordinary
It is that time of year again – the clock is winding down to the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 10 March, 2013, and the kilometres are adding up on our bike and trailer. After negotiations with the organisers, the rules were altered and Damian Gower, my 14-year-old son who is quadriplegic, will be able to participate – towed in a trailer attached to my bike. We will be riding in support of the Chaeli Campaign, to raise funds and awareness.

Thousands of participants and spectators are set to descend on picturesque Cape Town for the 2012 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon this Easter weekend, April 6 and 7, 2012.
Known as “the world’s most beautiful marathon”, this year’s event will take runners on a scenic tour of the Peninsula, with the Half Marathon set in the Southern Suburbs and the Ultra Marathon along the Chapman’s Peak Route.

Two Oceans Marathon 2011: Runners and road closures
The 2011 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon takes place in Cape Town on Saturday, starting from Main Road in Newlands at 06h25. The 56km ultra marathon and the 21km half-marathon both end at University of Cape Town, which like Newlands, is in the Southern Suburbs.

The links between South Africa and Brazil can be drawn back a long way.
The seas that supposedly divide these two countries in some sense unite them. Both ancient ships and hi-tech yachts have charted their course along these ocean lines. Pedro Cabral, the 15th century Portuguese explorer, was on his way to the Cape of Storms (named so by Bartolomeu Dias, another Portuguese explorer of the age, and one of Cabral’s contemporaries) when he landed on the coast of Brazil.
